175 Massey Multipower question (sort of)

We split a neighbors 175 because the pto clutch went out. He had just bought the tractor and had brush hogged for a day and a half. The inside of the bell housing was oil covered and upon further examination we find that the short line that goes on the multipower valve is missing so both ports for the line are open. (the multipower lever has been removed and it is in high range). Now he does not want to fix the multipower, but would like to know if it would be OK to plug the 2 ports for the missing line as I think that is where the oil is comming from. I'm not prepared to tell him to plug them because I don't know if it would hurt anything or create undo pressure if they were plugged. I checked the fluid in the tranny & it is now low. Any thoughts on this would be appreciateed. I asked on the Massey forum but didn't get any response in relation to plug or not plug the ports which is what I want. Keith

I can not specifically answer your line question, but seems like there is a fella that offers a spacer sleeve that eliminates the multi power on Masseys. Seems to me while I had the tractor split and in in this far that I would definitely install that system so as to insure a proper fix as his system also insured you always have engine braking.

I believe that info is searchable in the YT archives.

It can't be in high range with the line missing as oil goes through the line to feed the MP valve for high. I suspect it's already disabled inside at the MP oil pump, or it better be. Test it this way, fill the hyd oil to at least the low mark, clamp some locking pliers to the large PTO input shaft and spin it clockwise by hand. If it's unhooked inside there will be no hyd oil come out the oil fitting at the transmission upper right corner, where the pump outlet feeds the line. If oil DOES come out get the line back on. If this is clear as mud call me! Be glad to explain how the MP system works..

If Dieseltech's assumption is correct there is no engine braking in low range. That collar thingy I mentioned earlier will insure you always have engine braking even in low.

It has engine hold back just as any standard tranny w/o multipower would have. Speed is as if it didn't have M/P so I would agree with you Richard, it probably has been unhooked from inside the transmission & quite possibly the oil is comming from going down pretty darned steep hills brush hogging, so I think I'll cap off the fitting from the missing line comming from the tranny. Thanks a bunch guys for the help on this one. Keith
