New twist on drones and computer hacking

I know how much some love drones. Now you may have even more reasons to love them. Looks like things are out of control. I've heard where the government wants to register them. It's just a matter of time before a plane crash is caused by one.

At what point did we start calling model remote control airplanes "drones"?
Was it when we added a camera or was it when the remote allowed out of sight flight?

So since we have had remote control airplanes for years what makes it all of a sudden a problem today.

Could it be along the same lines as it's the guns fault someone got shot?
Like Ron White said....
You can't fix stupid.

Its the thought of a terrorist with a dirty bomb or some other bad doings that scare everyone, so i think the government must step in. Believe me i am not a government person, only to protect the citizens.

I don't think it's the R/C planes that are the problem. In my mind a civilian "drone" is one of those quad copter things that can hover for 15-30 minutes, carry a camera, and has a pretty big range. I've seen them at tractor pulls, mud runs, and even old tractor shows. Whisper quiet at 30+ feet and take some great video. Much like anything else, the knot heads, idiots, and stupid will make things hard for the common man.

Some people are afraid of everything. You can't legislate total safety.

I've seen the results of the war on terror. Now most people are terrified and the war on terror is used to pry into the lives of all Americans as well as any foreigner. We should just accept that we've lost the war on terror just like we've lost the war on drugs and move on with our lives.

I am absolutely sick to death of the idea that we need government to regulate things for our safety! Government is the biggest threat we have.

Just make them like firearms. If you are using it as a toy just paint the tip orange, that way everyone knows what your intentions are ;)

I agree they should not be flown in airspace that real airplanes are in.

But, really, how much worse is a small hobby drone as a hazard than a pigeon or duck or mid size bird to a regular aircraft? A drone is a couple lbs of plastic, wires, micro chips, and a battery, with a few very small bits of metal here and there. Battery is about the only real heavy, hazard part, and everything is as small and light as possible.

Is the threat really that big?

But clearly, big or small threat, drone owners shouldn't be flying where real aircraft is, I get that. Its just, what are the odds of anything bad happening to the real plane in a collision?

As to spying on networks, well. Anyone can drive down your street and do the same thing, using a drone for that would mean the spy is limited to about 15 minutes of network snooping, kinda silly, when you can park your car on the street and spy for hours..... Seems this is a blown up fake story that doesn't amount to anything real. That would be about the dumbest use of a drone for no good.....

I saw a film in the Navy. About flight deck safty. Where they dropped a 1/4 inch nut. Into a jet engine in slow motion. It was amazing to watch the engine come apart.

Yea FOD can be a problem but most civilian aircraft are multi engine and can fly safely with an engine out. A military combat jet. either single or dual engine can be in real trouble loosing that engine or one of two. On the multi engine fighter they can still get back but loose substantial performance.

On the other hand I doubt a drone is going to bring down a civilian aircraft.

If a little drone hits a windshield at 150+ MPH it can kill the pilot or passenger. If it hits a wing on a small plane it can take the plane down. We have to remember when a plane is damaged in the air the pilot can't just pull over on the shoulder. In the future the biggest use for civilian drones will be agriculture.

"It's not the drone ,it is the security network". Like it says in the article a guy can drive by your house, park and tap into your computer. The question here is can a jet engine suck in material and live . Ask Capt. Solly. I'm sure aircraft windows can take high impacts from objects.Pretty sure.

I'm of the opinion that federal legislation should be passed so that anywhere it's legal to discharge a shotgun, drones are fair game. Then when the noisy bas*#%rds fly over my property they do so at their own risk!

dr sportsterIf you read the comments below the video...somebody (I think they were there) explains how he was able to survive.

This guy was a final checker/troubleshooter on A6 aircraft. That was my job for 6 months on board the USS Midway.

Nobody really cares to snoop on some farmer in BFE, same goes for Joe Blow in suburbia. The juicy stuff goes on where you [b:b11f93e0cc][i:b11f93e0cc]cant[/b:b11f93e0cc][/i:b11f93e0cc] just park your car for hours and do your thing. You cant park for hours on a busy street downtown and even if you could, you cant get any signal from the 20th floor. But you [b:b11f93e0cc][i:b11f93e0cc]could[/i:b11f93e0cc][/b:b11f93e0cc] if you had a drone like in the article.

Never underestimate peoples desire for power or money. A drone like discribed in the article would be worth thousands of times its weight in gold. A person that could provide the drone and operate it would be very, very well paid...

My son heads up an IT security team. It's
