3-point issue after oil change .....

We have a 1975 Satoh 650G here, Japanese-made small tractor (2200 pounds) with a 3-point class one hitch. I don't expect many here to know these tractors inside out but I suspect that most 3-point systems work the same (or in a similar) way. Haven't had the tractor very long but the 3-point hitch was working (although I think the arms dropped after shutting the tractor down), not sure how well it worked, we never had an implement hooked up to it, but it did lift (with maybe a wee bit of chatter).

So last week I drained out the hydraulic oil, only 5 litres in there. Also cleaned out the metal mesh filter screen. It drained for a couple of days before I got back to refilling it. Started the tractor up today and the 3-point arms would not lift when putting the lever in the lift position.

Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Maybe an air lock of some kind or someone mentioned the pump maybe losing its prime. Anyways, I appreciate all responses .....

Does it have other hydraulic components such as implement cylinder remotes? If so, if you activate one of those levers (dead head) does the system apply pressure and load the engine? If yes then I would suspect somehow some trash got into the 3 point control valve. If no loading then the pump possibly did not reprime. If this is the case don't run the engine extensively until the issue is resolved you could ruin the hyd. pump. Sometimes placing air pressure on the hyd resivoir (3-5 psi i.e. a rag wrapped around an air blower stuck in the fill hole even if it is the gear case) while it is running may help. It may even require loosening the suction line at the pump while applying the air pressure. Just my experience from a similar problem I had with a 2010 Ford utility tractor. In that case the gear case was the resivoir and the hyd.pump was up on the engine.

No remote hydraulics like for rear implements or loader, etc, just the three point system. There is a short hose though (I didn't mention it) that I suspect might be part of a remote hydraulic set up if you added them on (like rear hoses or a loader, etc). This short hose I'm guessing is just an exit/return hose, it leaves one part of the control unit and then quickly loops back and connects back in to another location so it is not really doing much with the 3 point system. It does have threaded fittings on it of course. Can this be used to restore prime if that is the problem?

Using that hose for restoring pump prime may work but unlikely. Beware if you try what I described with air pressure with this hose loose while running the tractor the instant pressure that will develops if the pump picks up prime. Can you tell if the pump is mounted up on the engine and hydraulic lines going to it? The larger one of those which should be the suction, where it connects to the pump is where you should loosen. Then apply pressure to the resivoir. If you do this the engine should not be running. If you get oil to that point and quickly tighten the fitting would be your best chance. May be a two person job.

I will take a closer look later this weekend when I'm out where the tractor is. I believe the pump is incorporated right into the back end of the tractor (although it has a separate oil reserve, that is it is not part of the transmission/differential oil sharing like on some tractors). Thanks for the help so far.

Did the low pressure fix you suggested, that seemed to solve the problem, the system is working again. I will have to find a 3 point implement to hook up to and see how this all works ...... thanks for the help ...... Mike
