3410 Gehl w/Izuzu diesel, cranks slow. Have tried 2 different rebuilt starters but no difference. Has new 550 cca bat.{same size bat. as prev.one and worked good} w/all new cables. If I put the charger on bat.it will spin some faster and eventually will start. The old starter worked good untill all teeth sheared off starter drive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Take the battery to an auto parts store and have it checked. I have picked up more then one new battery that was bad from the get go. Also double check all cable connections and make sure there tight bright and shiny

Hi
Have you turned the motor over by hand with the starter out so you can see all the teeth on the ring gear. Maybe the starter stuck in to take all the teeth off seen it with a versatile swather with a ford motor. The ring on that was pretty chewed in spots. Maybe thats binding it tight.

The other thing I saw on a tractor we owned was a bearing on the crank picked up slightly. The first thought on that was battery/wires and starter but everything tested good. the starter guy suggested tight bearing on crank, we turned it by hand with a big socket and you could feel it was tight when we clued in.
That was the same as yours would spin over but not fast enough, but it would fire up in 6ft if it was towed, no oil gauge but the light went out when it ran.
I know those motors will spin bearings and chuck rods, the shop I worked in had one and we put a 4 cyl ford gas in it as there was very few used diesels around for it at a sensible price 13 years ago in Canada.
Check absolutely everything simple first, I'd hate for you to tear that motor apart and find it wasn't that you'd hate me to after as well !!!!!!.
Regards Robert

Does the negative battery cable fasten direct to the engine. If not seek out and clean engine to frame ground strap connections. Also second the idea that hyd pump or hydrostat is building pressure while you are cranking.
