Be careful out there

There are some crazy people that want to take pictures while driving slowly down the state highways. Sure gets your attention to come over a hill and see the road is all taken. These guys are alert and get over for everyone so not really a safety issue on the highways.

A semi rear ended a combine north of Waterloo, flipped the combine over and put semi in the ditch.

There are a few around here that like to pull that stunt on the rural roads. They'll have 6 foot of header sticking over both sides of the road. A select few though, mostly the guys associated with the Dutch/Belgian dairies, they don't think there are any rules that apply to them. When I first started helping my dad farming, he told me "you get over for cars if it is possible!" Don't cause a disruption or hazard if you can help it. He's 64 years old now and would still probably kick my *** if I wasn't courteous to traffic.

Yesterday morning, I was one of four vehicles following a combine that was taking up the entire road. I could see his mirrors, so I knew he could see me if he looked. Followed him for about a mile until oncoming traffic forced him to pull over. After the oncoming traffic cleared, all of us behind him got around.

Don't know if some of these guys are overly fatigued, just don't give a darn, or are on a power rush.

I agree David G always put your head on a cart and pull it behind the combine, never hold traffic up behind you, let them around every chance you get

A head-on crash would probably total the combine as well. I wonder how badly the combine frame, side panels and shafts were bent. Even though the combine weights four to six times as much as the pickup the combine driver probably hit the steering column and the windshield. No fun in either vehicle.

The combine belongs to a co-workers father-inlaw. The combine was south bound on a 4 lane highway with the two right tires on the shoulder. The semi driver had over a 1/4 mile to move over to the other lane because there was no other traffic keeping him from doing so. The combine driver saw the truck coming and braced for impact. It ripped the back left tire off the rim on the combine and flipped it over. The unloading auger was placed in the semi's trailer. The front axle on the semi was ripped loose and he ended in the ditch on the other side of the road a ways down from impact. The fellow that was in the combine was out walking around looking at the damage when fire - rescue started to show up. The semi driver was day dreaming cruising down the road. Fortunate of no fatalities. Could have been worse.

THAT sentiment prevails more and more as people get more "Citified" and have NO patience..

They have no conception of what it is like to move equipment on the roads..

Seldom does one take the Header off a combine with a 13' Header ( you should have already KNOWN that)...

ME, me, me is all they seem to understand anymore..

They would rather take a chance being RUN OVER than wait 5 seconds.. ( Classic Morons)...
