Points, Coil, and Engine Manual Wisconsin VH4D

Hi There,

New guy reporting in. I have a 1960 vintage Owatonna Mustang 1000 Skidsteer. (I Think 1965) My engine is a Wisconsin VH4D Serial # 4410672. I would like to buy a set of points, condenser, rotor and cap, and would like to know if the coil has an internal resistor or not. Also does anyone know which engine manual I should get which would include point and plug settings.

Thank you very much,

Bill

Ignition parts can be found at any good parts store. Sometimes you can find a free manual on the net, but most manuals can be found the cheapest on ebay (unfortunately) if you are patient.

Hi Den,

It has a coil and distributor...I'm not getting a spark...before I put my glasses on I thought the points were, gone it looked like the contacts were welded on one side and not moving, but upon closer look they look fine...I'm going to have my wife crank it while I see if they are sparking, adjust them, they look wider that .018 hopefully the condenser isn't gone, don't know how to check that. If I get a spark at the points, but not out of the coil, I guess the coil might be bad? Upon poking around I found it is a 1967 engine. I've had the tractor since 1988 and never had a problem, I guess it's time...Bill

POINT TYPE IGNITION
DISTRIBUTOR
The distributor breaker point gap should be .018 to .022
inches. To readjust breaker point gap, turn engine over by
means of the starting crank until the distributor breaker arm
rubbing block is on a high point of the cam. Loosen the
stationary contact locknut and screw fixed contact, in or
out, until correct gap is obtained. Tighten locknut and re-
check gap.
Clean points by opening then up while closed and polishing them using a business card.

Good chance the points are bad or corroded and need cleaned or replaced. Not likely to be a bad coil since they almost never go bad. Check the points first then pull the center wire out of the cap and hold it close to the engine some place and spin it over. You should see a blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. no spark or weak spark means a points problem. If you have a good spark there check at the plug wires for the same type of spark. If no spark or weak there rotor or cap maybe bad

Thanks everyone, I have some things to check tomorrow. The last time I started it, it ran about 5 minutes and konked out. I waited a couple minutes and it started right back up and ran an hour or so. This time I started it, it konked out after a couple minutes, and wouldn't restart, no spark at the plugs. I'll work on it tomorrow and report back.

Thanks again, Bill

Billy,Email me and I will email you a Manual, PDF file for a VH4D.My email is open in the classic view, to maybe help you out some.

So it was dark this morning, I filed the points a bit, had my wife crank it while I looked for spark...suddenly there was spark everywhere, shooting out of the coil as well. I put it back together and all was fine. So I'll get some new points and distributor cap, rotor and wires and I should be good. Thanks to all that responded. Bill

Instead of replacing points get you one of those electronic ignition kits with the new coil and you will be glad you did,do a google search for electric ignition and
there is a company in Austin Tx that sells them for about a hundred bucks it will be the best hundred bucks you ever spent
