4840 power steering

I seem to have a leak coming from my power steering motor on my 4840. Looks to be easy to pull but never rebuilt one. I did several 4020 but this one looks a lot smaller. Any body ever tear into one of these?

Years ago when I bought a Case 1490 the motor was leaking. They fixed it for me, and said that clearances are extremely tight so that you have to heat the housing and cool the rotor in order to assemble it.

There's a serial number break at 022986 to get correct repair parts. I can't remember but IIRC there's a special way to install pin(parts key 25) after it's been removed. Maybe one of the real JD tech's will chime in.

It sounds like you are referring to the steering "metering" pump at the lower end of the steer column..and not the steering motor which is down at the front axle..if this is correct you can remove the column with out removing the dash ,,pull the steer wheel and unhook the things needed and drop it out the bottom there is a check valve in this metering pump that should be changed as you replace the seal and also the upper thrust bearing needs checked out,, as the thrust bearing wears it will allow the steer shaft to come up out of the seal a bit..

good question my 4840 will drip very little but its going to be a problem someday, good time to learn how to fix it

yes its the metering pump under dash. I have removed several of them but never tore into it. The tractor does not get used much but it makes a little mess on floor board. Its not the hoses because its wet above them. Is there much to them? Did several 4020 and they were a pain.

Metering pump and 4020 steering valve shouldn't be mentioned in same sentence. IMHO metering pump is very simple & 4020 steering valve is/was much TOO COMPLICATED.

Since it's a very minor leak, might try some Lucas power steering stop leak. I've stopped or slowed several leakers using it, no adverse effects.

Steering gears and pumps can be a real challenge to get right, I only go in when it's absolutely necessary.

"might try some Lucas power steering stop leak"

The 4840 has a common transmission oil/hydraulic system that holds probably 15 to 20 GALLONS!

How much Lucas PS goo would he have to use???

Or NOT!

I think I'd suggest to correct the leak instead of contaminating hyd system with Lucas stop leak.

There is not much to them and the shaft lifts up out of the seal a bit when the thrust bearing is worn...take it out and fix it,,,we all know what happens when you step out of the cab with oily boots,,you go ankles over elbows off the top step...
