Scrap Steel

Just checked with the local yard. Currently at $90.00 at ton here , don't see a lot of
movement thou.

I talked with a local scrap steel employee today and asked what they're paying. He listed off several categories. The lower category (I think he said #2 sheet) only $35 a ton, (higher grade like "I" beams $60 a ton) then he added it will go lower AND a year ago the same $35 category was $230 a ton. He said the last time it was that cheap was in 2008-- hope it's not a sign of things to come.

There's indicators that economics Federal Reserve people monitor, so they can forecst economic future, and I betcha scrap steel price trends are one indicator.

talked with my uncle this morning he said expect it to get cheaper, he just put in a 7 million shredder and nobody is wanting the shredded metal. Cousin is about to lose his mind, not enough coming in to keep the new toy working and laying off employees for the first time in 42 years.

Along the same line of thought, yesterday I called the local yard to find out what aluminum cans were bringing. She said 32 cents a pound. Last time I called they were 50 cents. I needed to get to my chop saw, and a bunch of bags of cans were in the way. I have 32 big dog food bags of mashed beer cans that were in the way, so after calling, I just found them another home for the mean time until they go up. I should have hauled them off when they were still up, story of my life, day late and dollar short!!

A survey I took Monday of Modesto, CA yards found prices for #1 steel from $50 to $80 per ton.
Aluminum cans are a different thing, they are subsidized by government and the price has nothing to do with the value of the metal.
