How to fix a leaking oil dipstick

My friend just had his tractor(farmall 240) overhauled, but is still having a little blow by oil coming from the dipstick. Is there anything I can do to it so it seals better? There are 2 o-rings and possibly a felt ring on the dipstick that I suppose are there to stop blow-by. Would a new felt piece do the trick? Thanks

I'd be finding out why it's trying to blow out the dipstick instead of the blowby tube. Is it plugged?

ya, better give it a good work out and up to operating temperature. to get those rings seated in the cyl's. that should smarten it up. it should not be blowing out of dip stick.

hat he says^^^

If you have blow-by sounds like the rings or a ring is not seated properly. Or possible a cracked ring on the install.

An engine is an air pump. As pistons move up or down and displace air, breathers take in or displace air from the crank case. For as much air is moved up or down, air gets moved around, traveling the same direction. If an engine was perfect with no leaks, whatever is moved around in the crank case would stay there between cylinders, but nothing is perfectly air tight. My guess, you have a breather blocked or rings blowing by, and the air is trying to ventilate where ever it can. If you have actual bad o-rings at the dipstick tube, chances are that you can get replacements from an auto parts store that carries "DORMAN" products (orange steel drawers).

Good luck.

A NEW engine MUST be WORKED within 15 minutes or start-up, or the cylinders will be too glazed to Seat the Rings....

BTDT...

Put some CHEAP oil in it (5-20wt( and WORK the SNOT out of it for an hour or two, then change the oil).

Not too sure what ya think of this, but it used to be done to get rings to Seat..

With engine running, slowly SIFT BonAmi into the inlet to the carburetor..
Use about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the container as most will be blown straight up the exhaust pipe.

It will help if the cylinder walls have already Glazed..

I have also heard of "Comet Cleanser" dusted in the same way works..

It really won't "Hurt" anything and will help seat the Rings...

Rings may not be seated -a good way to break in a fresh rebuild is to hook the PTO up to a M&W dyno and load the engine per their recommended schedule 8)
