Duetz engine

I have a duetz f4l912 tractor that I just put new rod bearings and rings in it but it has a loud knock and is throwing black smoke....what could be my problem?????

Try loosening one injector line at a time until the cylinder misfires. Listen for the sound to change, the
black smoke to change. If you can narrow it down to one cylinder, try moving that injector to another
cylinder, see if the problem moves with the injector.

If the noise stays with one cylinder, go back in and see what's wrong. Diesels are very exacting machines, no
forgiveness for error!

If an injector is stuck open that can cause a loud knock too. A quick check I use is to remove all injector lines, then watch each injector inlet while cranking the engine. If an injector tip is stuck open the compression will blow fuel backward out the injector inlet, worth a look.

I would agree with the others, that the knock issue could have been fuel all along, so would look at correcting that. I am curious what the pistons, cylinders, rings and bearings looked like when you took them out.

the sound comes and goes but it has one manifold bolt missing would that make it smoke black smoke really bad

Did you check the head to piston clearance? This is very important on deutz engines. I use 2mm soldier through the nozzle hole. I like 1.5mm clearance.Did this engine have a fire ring? If so make sure the old one wasnt a different thickness. I have built my share of these engines give me a call if you cant figure it out. I would be glad to give you some pointers ,, Good luck,,,, Al 231-757-0064

(reply to they all had fire rings and I just put 3 new piston rings on each piston and new rod bearings old bearing were chewed up replaced them do they have four thrust washers or 2 against the flywheel

Should have 1 upper and 1 lower trust washer each side of the crank trust journal,..4 in total.
I vote for a bad injector on the black smoking.

I don't see a groove on the back by the flywheel for the thrust washers to sit and I had 2 there before they wore down and caused friction

(quoted from post at 09:38:54 10/12/15) Pulled oil pan back off and found 2 thrust washers in my oil pan what could make this happen???
o much crank side play to hold the 2 in place in the groove.
Should have washers on both sides, axial crank play should only be a couple thou.

Maybe you got the wrong bearing there altogether?
Maybe you need one that has the trust washers incorporated in the Main shells.
