Retirement and getting older!!!

I am filing a complaint!!!! LOL My real life is nothing like the commercials that they run on TV all the time. Showing retired people walking on the beach, holding hands. Riding/running and etc. Take this pill or that pill and your back to chasing the better half around. ( Heck if I caught mine these days I would need old age instructions LOL)

I think they should show some REAL retired people on these commercials. Maybe with before and after pictures. That way we can tell if the advertised product actually does what they say it does. <

p>They tell us that there are getting to be more retired/older people so they should target "real" shows and commercials to us old people. LOL Wouldn't that "SHOCK" the youngsters!!!!! You know. a couple of old guys in speedos on the beach with there equally aged companions in two piece beating suits. Yep that would roll in the ratings. LOL

i am almost 59 been at the same job for forty years this year working on a asphalt plant maybe a couple more i can find out what the golden years are about.

I'm a couple of years away from retirement, I've always heard that growing old ain't for sissies and now I believer it. My Mom used to say that she had 3 men in her life. She was married to my dad but went to bed with Ben Gay and wakes up with Arthur Itis

As I'm sitting here my left shoulder aches, I mean really aches. I thought to myself, I didn't do anything to cause this... then I remembered, oh yeah, I carried two 5 gallon buckets full of water, yeah they felt heavier than they used to...

I am just about 67 and not doing to bad most of the time but if I do to much sure do feel it a have to keep on moving or old age will really get you. Walking do stretching exercising lift weights. just don't sit in the easy chair. Randy

I don't know your age, JD Seller but I believe I am a little older. I agree with you on the stupid commercials they show on the boob tube and I am glad that I don't watch them very often. They are portrayed by washed up actors who will say anything for money. The ones that irritate me the most are the ones selling life insurance to elderly people and the ones pushing reverse mortgages. They are selling crap to the most gullible people..

I retired from my last job in 1991 and have not had a chance to take a break since but I am glad that I can still keep going. Tomorrow I hope to finish combining my soybeans and then the corn. J D Seller you are not done yet unless you decide to throw in the towel and I don't read that in you. It is pretty obvious to me and others that you are pretty much alive and well aware of the absurdities of life and those who think we old folks are stupid. Keep posting your great observations. Happy farming.

Ads never reflect reality as they are geared to make the targeted group feel good about themselves and the product they are selling. Not many people want to face reality anymore in ads,TV or real life and they sure will not want to buy a product that reminds them of the fact they're going to get old, most likely have major health problems, spend time in a place like a nursing home where few if anyone cares the least bit about them, get progressively worse then die an uneventful death.Would you buy a product associated with that reality?

I turned 66 last Sunday and plan to work another year and a half before retiring (again). Health permitting, I have lots of things that I hope to do in my "golden years."

Yesterday, I buried my little brother of 62. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at work with his boots on. He never saw a single day of retirement.

Life is short. Make the most of it.

I am 65. My brain says get up lets get things done. My body says hold on. Lets talk about this.I see all the pill adds on TV telling me how young I will feel if I take them. Then I am told they could also kill me. So I get up slowly don't take the pills. Go to work at the feed store, slower than I used to. But I am still moving. Dream about how things used to be.

In 2018 my teaching license expires, so I must retire then or maybe earlier. I will then have more time to take better care of the farm and do a few projects with tractors. Am wondering about doing volunteer counseling or something like that.

Growing older is not a bad thing- as they say, it beats the alternative. However, learn to slow down. Stay active, but don't overdo. Some of the heavy work should best be left to the younger generation if you have that option. My dad tried to turn over a little of the work to my sister who stayed at home, but she wasn't able to do it. At 75, he started planning on slowing down, but he should have started earlier. He wore himself out and died too young. The moral of the story is- stay active, but don't overdo and retain a hope for the future, continue to make a few plans.

They are called the "the metal years"; silver in your hair, gold in your teeth and lead in your butt. On the plus side though there is a never ending supply of gas.

If you want to see more TV ads targeted to older people, watch some noon local news programs. Ours are filled with geriatric medical, insurance and lawyer ads, they aren't pretty.

nd if you don't keep on getting up you will not be able to. Arth pain will make you slow at what you do but if you don't at least work at it it only gets worse. All these different malladies affect us in different ways. My grand father retired at 62 in the spring of 62. He then used up 4 different cars going fishing over the next 22 years. He would try to go Mon, wed and Fri. Did very well for about 20 years. A number of his friends and neighbors retired to town at about the same time. It seemed as though the ones who sat down kicked back and did nothing didn't last long. Keeping on is the only thing that will keep some of us alive.

G'Day JD. I'm older than you and look at retirement this way. Both you and I have reached this plateau in life while my wife and your first wife were not as fortunate. We get to play with grandkids that our wives did not get to do as well. I too am there to help the boys when needed and offer advice when asked. Think how fortunate we are,in that many others not involved in farming, aren't able to keep on keeping on in something that we love. This weekend is our Canadian Thanksgiving and,on refection, this has been one of the best years I have ever experienced in farming, and our family has welcomed another grand-daughter as well!! Nothing better!!

JD, Think about it this way, The older you get the easier it is to be a good Christian. When you get about eighty there isn't many of those Ten Commandments you are able to break anymore. I am 75 and this is my last season. I feel that a lot in life is timing and when you see a farm publication with a auction sale heading that reads "To settle the estate of" I feel that mans timing was too late. I am not letting that happen. I have the nicest wife in the world but as Will Rogers always said "Every one is ignorant, only in different subjects." When it comes to farm machinery my wife wouldn't know a bale of hay from a bulldozer. I am really kind of excited about this thing called retirement but I feel that I am just relinquishing some management decisions to the next generation. My bucket list would take a washtub to hold. I could write all day about this but have to go to the field and get the combine running. Tom

Well Tom you will serve the younger generation well by turning over control to them while your around to help when needed. I think you will find it harder to "retire" than you think. It has been harder than I thought to give daily control to the boys. I even went out and have a day job again just to keep out of their hair.

well this is the deal the only thing that improves with age is your imagination. quote {Imagination} {definition, the faculty of imagining, or of forming mental images or concepts of what is not actually present to the senses} in other word we think we can do think that we can any more.

Most Doctors now days seem to be pill pushers, I don't take any so called medicine, have not for many years, if I am in pain I take a hot shower or drink beer, or both. Eat wholesome food, work everyday and get up early seems to have worked for the men in my family so I don't expect to find a better prescription.

I guess I'm like an inventor or something. I want to solve the problem then let somebody else do the manufacturing while I move on to something else.
I spent the last several years obsessing about how to retire. Now that I think I've got it figured out,I don't have any interest in doing it anymore. I guess I know I can if I want to,but I just don't want to. There's enough peace of mind in knowing. It doesn't take but a few hours for me to get real tired of sitting around. To be staring at my entire future with nothing to do or dread having to do? No thanks. I'll just keep downsizing as my health and ambition require, but when I die, somebody will probably have to come to the barn or the field and tell me it finally happened.

They should show reality in those TV ads.

My wife retired a couple of years ago, so now she has time to sit around and think up new projects for me to do that usually take more time than I have and cost more money than I want to spend.

When we retired, we went where we wanted to go, did what we wanted to do and then I went back to my woodworking hobby full time. After a few years, I cut back to 8 hours a day, later still I cut back to 4 hours a day. Now I've not done any woodwork the last 2 years because of health.

We'll be retired 18 years at the end of December. Just enjoy retirement while you can; that too will come to an end - and there isn't much you can do about it.

Last year I stopped buying softener salt in 40lb. bags as they were hard to handle; now I buy the 25lb. bags of salt.

I'm 73, been fully retired for 8 years. I have enough hobbies, land and interests to keep me as active as I want to be. Saturday I took an 8 hour trail ride, just me, my horse and 2 dogs. I tend a 1/2 acre garden we can and freeze tomatoes, corn & beans. Am active in church activities and sometimes maintenance. We like to travel, in fact just got back from 3 weeks in Montana and Idaho (can't afford that very often, though). I look at it like this: unless you are rich, it is a case of whether you have the money and not the time, or the time and not the money. Most retired folks fall into the later category!

I am 61 and am doing the most technically challenging job I have ever done.
Retirement is not even on the horizon. Daughter is a senior this year at a private
college. She is worth every penny.
