M 2 Gleaner combine

A guy wants to trade me a M 2 Gleaner combine with a 24 foot maze header. I don't know to much about combines. What should I look for
when I go to look at it. It has about 1600 hours on the diesel motor. He wants about $1500 I think I talked him down to $1000 trade in value for
a tractor I have.. He said its about a 80 model runs good and looks good. The air conditioner needs to be recharged. It was suppose to be only
used on one farm all it's life. What are these things worth ?

A lot depends on your location, and combine location. They don't have as much value in the corn belt from what I've been told. Here in the north, they still bring decent prices. I would think no matter what, $1500 would have been more than fair, if it was in decent shape.

If it runs it's worth that. They are a decent machine and the easiest to work on of any brand. They are a little lighter made tho so you can't push them as hard as some other brands. I had an L2 and liked it a lot.

Here 'maize' is corn, and we count corn heads by number of rows.

A 24 foot soybean or wheat head would be pretty big, but work, on a M combine.

Is it a hydro,or gear transmission?

In good shape and with one good head, I would think an M2 would be worth $10,000 to some. Maybe less if it is a simple wheat head, but not much less. That is low hours if they are accurate.

Check bin floor where it transitions to the unloading auger. Check all spring loaded iders and pulleys for trueness---that is all are aligned peopaerly with their belts. Check rear pto extension /flywheel at the back of the engine for cracks, looseness. Check both raddle chains for proper alignment missing slats etc and raddle flors for flatness, that is no 'bellying' in the floor.
check walkers and grain pan for cracks , grain elevators etc. They are a pretty good machine, better with the 426 engine, but that may not have been available in an M2 ALSO, CHECK CONCAVE DOOR AND CONCAVE FOR DAMAGE FROM STONES--DOOR SHOULD CLOSE TIGHT AND EVENLY AND OVERCEnter latch should snap in---please ignore caps, too early in the morning...yawn.
