Update: Another hunting question?

Earlier I had asked "In my state, let's use squirrels for example, you are allowed a daily bag limit of 6 but allowed to have 12 in your possession (like in case you went on a weekend hunting trip, that would be a 2 day total).

But, I can have a whole freezer full back home.

I have been told by others from different states that in their state the 12 possession limit means 12 is the total you can have in your possession, including any at home.

I asked the local game warden and he said they don't care how many you have at home, just what is in your possession while out in the field.

How is the possession limit law handled in your state?".

Some responded that in their state ALL game harvested, including what is already in their freezer at home as the total possession limit.

Responders were 'gundoctor from Vermont', 'pete 23 from Minnesota' and 'da.bees from????'.

I checked the regs from Vermont and Minnesota and can't find any reference to possession limits including what you have at home.

Are y'all just guessing and pulling this idea from your hats or do you have a possible link to the DNR website to verify your statements.

Inquiring minds want to know...

LAA- Naw, it just bothers me when people want to give false information. Just one of my many pet peeves. LOL

The 6 and 12 rule/limit applies in Louisiana and it means in your immediate possession with a gun in your hand. I cannot imagine any game warden anywhere having the right to look in your freezer much less count the squirrels you may or may not have in your freezer, if there is and if I was a real good squirrel hunter I would be in a bind because I can't eat 6 squirrels a day.

LAA- Yup, there is no law that counts for what is in your freezer pertaining to squirrels. Maybe the other posters got confused and mixed C.I.T.E.S. critters up with normal game???

C.I.T.E.S. critters do have a total yearly limit (including the freezer) but not your normal game.

Greg1959, here is the text from the Texas Handbook.

Possession Limit:
The maximum number of a species that lawfully may be in one person’s possession at any time
after the first day of a hunting season, except for deer, antelope, and turkey. On the first day of
any open season, the possession limit is the same as the daily bag limit. After the first day, the possession
limit becomes twice the daily bag limit (except for quail and some migratory birds). For all
wildlife resources taken for personal consumption and for which there is a possession limit, the
possession limit shall not apply after the wildlife resource has reached the possessor’s permanent
residence and has been finally processed.

And here is a link where you can read all you want.

Hope this helps you,,Enjoy

Yes in La bag limit means on your person.
Possession limit means in your camper.
You have more than the bag limit you better have a means of staying over night.
Some exceptions to the rules is on a charter boat when the boat stays out for more than 1 day you can have the possession limit on you.
We do have season limit of some things.

Pete 23 is correct about MN possession laws.
If the possession limit of say, walleyes is 6 per person it means 6 including those in your freezer. It keeps people from going out and getting their limit (3) then cleaning them and tossing them in the freezer, then going back out for another limit, cleaning them, etc, etc.
The same thing applies to grouse, ducks, squirrels or whatever.

wow, some of those laws would make it really tough to stock your freezer for the winter.

With tree rats and rabbits I really wouldn't have a clue if asked.
Small game gets the meat stripped and baggied and frozen, or made into a stew and frozen in dinner size containers.
(having skinned, frozen, rat-looking creatures in the freezer makes me very unpopular at home)

some rules have a sentence about being 'processed'
Might want to check that angle.
