Well, Bought Another One!!

Went to go look at that other Farmall M today...

Has a nice DuAll 250 loader on it, with a 3 spool valve, and remotes at the bucket. Wide Front, tight steering, nice machine all in all.

The Bad,

No sheet metal,
Left Brake issues,
Clutch is tight,
Engine is stuck ( I think )
Front bolster is wasted,
Frame rails are bad ish
wfe needs tie rods and rims to be serviceable.

The Good,

has 15.5 x 38 rear tires, at probably %75 tread.
Has a LIVE Mag Drive hydro pump for the loader, and a different Mag attached to it.
Has an "EZ" ride Monre seat, minus the shock.
2 sets of rear wheel weights.
Unbroken rear wheels
Nearly all of the throttle linkage, and that kind of stuff is TIGHT.

And quite possibily the biggest plus of all, it has an X1 at the end of the serial number... Which, if it is the same as the H, means that it has the higher compression head / engine right?

Very excited about it! No pictures yet, but I hope to get it home soon...

How do you guys think I did?!

You sure have a pile of M 's there, all needing work (when they arrive, anyway). . What's this one number 3 or 4 that you bought? From the crude des. I'd guess in the area of $600, maybe a tad more, with all the extras. If so(or better) I'd think it was a fair price.

X1 I thought was simply gas engine. I could be (and most likely is) wrong.

What the happening on that 400 you asked about the other day

This is No. 3. I have one of them running, but it has a rod bearing failing, and knocking... No.2 is just a parts machine really. Nothing but the rear case left.

I haven't decided what I am going to do about the 400... I REALLY shouldn't be spending that kind of money on a tractor right now, espically after dropping cash on this one today... But, I think it would be a really good machine for me in the future, and I would really like it over an M, just because it is different, and besides, I am a "collector" right?! :)

Well, deal went under on the 400.. I offered $700, and told him I just couldn't do $1000. He was a great guy to deal with on the phone, and very politely passed on my offer. Maybe he will think about it, and come around to it, but if not, that is okay too... ;)

Can't wait to get this new 1948 M home... Will be a good machine one day! ;)

Don't fall into the "collector:" trip That is a man who has paid 10k for 10 parts tractors, and is working on his parade tractor for 10 years old still does not have one perfect resto.
Get one done to perfection, then decide if you need two.
Why have 10 pos old skells around, trashing up your property, when two drop dead gorgeous restos could be there?

So, why didn't you negotiate on the 400? He wants $1000, you offered $700, so if you raise your offer he might come off his price some.
The old saying goes that a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.
One running, working tractor is still better than a field full of broken and non-running tractors.

Well, ya. You guys know me, I am always a good wheeler and dealer.

I asked him if he would consider coming off of the $1000 at all, and he said no. (which is fair because the ad SAID, no negotiable) He told me he had someone coming to look at it today, and he thought they would take it, which, they would be there before me anyways.

I told him my situation, and said that $700 was the best I could do, and if he would consider working with me, or coming off the $1000 a little, to please give me a call...

I think I did the right thing, and after sleeping on it, I am very excited to be getting this M home, and, well, as we all know, there will be another! ;)
