Finally broke the muffler on my WD this morning...

Stanley muffler that is about... 10 or 15 years old. Tractor doesn't get heavy use at all. Was out mowing with it today and she started to roll around in the socket in the hood. I found it had completely separated about two inches above the exhaust manifold. The tractor stays in a shed and is canned; really surprised it failed like this.

If you don't mind the sweet sound of that engine , just put a straight pipe over that piece in the manifold with a rain cap . I have a WC and WD45 set up like that .

Because it is a Stanley....if it was a Nelson it would be fine yet. The Nelson also had the skirt on the bottom so water couldn't run down the outside of the muffler and into the manifold. I have a couple of NOS Nelsons, waiting for the right tractor to put them on. Put a NOS Nelson from my stash on my D15 diesel yesterday, sounds great!

Starting it up for just a minute or two, the exhaust fumes are water vapor and CO2, and condenses water, which runs back down and collects right inside that area, and if you leave it, it rusts right out. If you don't heat it up, and vaporize off the water, that's what happens. Also happens to my pickup if I just go out to move it 15' away, shut it off and leave it.

Why not braze a piece of pipe into the manifold and then you can use a regular muffler?I've done several
that way works good.

Every Stanley muffler I've used needed all the
seams welded then they'll last longer.

Yeah I could probably get it welded back together and reinstall for awhile... I'll have to think about it. Once I get it taken off entirely, I may know more.
