Should just stop doing things

Today I managed to burn my finger,It still hurts. cut my arm, and break my glasses, and I still have a few hours to go. What I did find out. I can order an eye glass frame on line for 16.00, and not 45.00 from Cosco. I know they need to make a profit, but two times the amount. Stan

Last time I had an eye exam was about 4 years ago. Went to a new place that I hadn't used before. Had the exam done, nothing unusual, just the basics, reasonable price.

Then was told to go to the fitting room for frame selection... There I encountered a middle age lady, wearing lots of bling, not sure if it was real, but when she spoke, out came this extremely fake, exaggerated, high society, whining voice, like something you would hear in an exclusive Hollywood boutique! She proceeded to show me the basic wire frames I requested.

"Oh yes, you have made a very wise decision with those, you'll just love those frames!" on and on she gushed.

"How much?"

"Oh those lovely frames are only $785.00."

"WHAT! Let's go for the economy model!"

"Welllllll... We have these for $450.00.!

As Rick Harrison on Pawn Stars would say "Not gonna' happen! Just give me my prescription so I can go now please!"

And I did, went to Lux Optical, 2 pair no-line bifocals, $149.00 with a coupon.

I only need glasses for reading, close up work. Drug store glasses work fine. Daughter's drugstore has a big name brand in the three pack for $18. Have her watch the sales, and pick them up two for one price. That's $3.00 each... If I break or damage, or loose, no big deal... And this one brand is surprisingly durable. Daughter has an online source for prescription glasses for her kids that are far cheaper than optical store prices. And her kids go through a lot of glasses. Not always their fault. While back, grandson left his on desk in school when he went out to recess. Came back in to find them stomped into the floor with a pair of muddy tennies.

Stan think about this when you spend your money at big box stores and i am including all of them while they are charging you 3 times the price anything should be, they are breaking their necks trying to outdo each other donating to "charity' your money in THEIR name.... disgusting...

I could never figure why;
1. Glasses cost hundreds and hundreds, when the best latest model Stihl saw, a perfect example of the latest in mechanical engineering and metllurgical engineering, costs less.
2. Hearing aids cost MUCH more, and all they are is a little battery and amplifier and speaker. The latest model ACER compjter with Windows, etc etc, costs less.
Oh, wait, I remember, avarice.

I only need glasses to read the fine print and to see far away when driving. So I go to the places that advertise two pair for $69. I get the very small kid size frames so when driving I can look under the glasses and see the instruments. I get one pair for driving and one for fine print. Only wear them when needed. I keep a set of glasses in each vehicle and a pair of reading at 2 different desks. Have extras too, because sometimes the glasses grow legs and walk off.

If I had a dollar for every time that a judge told me to "...stop doing things..." I'd be so filthy rich that I could sit back and pay other folks to do those things for me, then watch the judge tell them to "...stop doing things...".

I know what you mean about just quitting doing things. I helped cook lunch for a charity event yesterday and managed to slice open the pad of the end on my left index finger. I'm supposed to play the ukulele with a band this coming Saturday at our tractor show, and I tried to practice last night and that finger ached so bad I couldn't play.

As for the eyeglasses, I happened on to a deal years ago. The local university has an optometry school and eye clinic and dispensary. I still go there for my eye test and glasses even though it's over an hour away. They discount their frames quite a lot. 20 years ago, I bought some unbreakable high-end titanium frames from them, about 120 bucks--- after breaking three pairs in one year. They were cheaper than 3 of the cheaper frames I'd broken. I got them and really liked them and had them switch lenses over 12 years when I needed them--- still using the same frame. These things took getting knocked off my head and landing underneath a running bushhog. Anyway, I finally decided I'd like a pair of sunglasses with those same frames. I was in a mall and walked past one of those 3-hour eyeglass places which had huge signs saying all frames were 50% off that day. Lady behind the counter told me yes, she had those frames on hand but that they were very expensive. I asked how much and she said the frames were 700 bucks by themselves (that was half-price), and that with bifocal lenses they'd be over 1200. I went to the optometry clinic and got everything for $225. Same frame. One other thing--- I now buy a spare el-cheapo pair when I get new ones--- they have a selection of frames for 25 bucks that is pretty good--- I get metal frames with the springs in the hinges which need less adjusting over time. Also, this clinic collects eyeglasses from various organizations and provides free used frames to low-income folks. I've seen them actually fitting the free frames to folks in there.

Since I only use glasses for fine close up work or reading in low light, I use "dollar store" glasses that I get for a dollar at the store. Yes, they are sometimes crappy frames, and they are not durable and get scratched up really easy, but THEY ARE ONLY A DOLLAR!!!! I can keep a set in the car, at the garage, by the computer, and anywhere else I might need them. And, if they get broke, I can replace them for a DOLLAR!!!

Years ago (30+) I did some computer work for an eyeglass frame distributor on the East Coast. I mentioned I had a problem with my frames. They took me into a showroom and told me to pick out a frame close to size to mine and they would fit my lenses to it. They also told me what their "imported Italian designer" frames cost them. Don't remember the exact number but the difference between what the frames cost them and what they charged was eye-popping (pun intended). It was NOT in the single digit multipliers.
