international 424 power steering

looking to add power steering to my tractor, if i could find power assist would help, maybe power steering off a gleaner combine?

FWIW, my 424 diesel had "torque generator" power steering added by a PO. It works, but is a little slow and jerky sometimes. They used a flow divider after the hydraulic pump, which REALLY slow the 3-point down at lower engine speeds.

It would be easy enough to add power steering off of a combine or other equipment, except that it takes a bit of engineering to attach a steering cylinder to the existing adjustable-width front end. I have considered simply installing a factory setup off of a boneyard tractor, but that gets pricey.

I did it a couple of years ago on my 434. Some on this site bagged my idea, others were very helpful.
I used a ram type power steering kit for a Fordson Major, and modified mountings and the link to the pitman arm. My steering box was very worn, but i made up a new peg for and the power steering takes all the load off the steering box. All the box does now really is to trip the link on the ram. Old design, but a very simple and effective way. I have a loader on the tractor and the steering feels the same with or without it fitted.
OK, for the power, I used the original pump. I thought about upgrading it, but tried first and found it is ok. But you WILL need a hydraulic priority valve. I used an adjustable one as the steering doesn't need a lot of flow compared to the rest of the system. I also had to fit a relief valve as the steering only uses around 1000psi, the system produces around 2000. The steering is terrific, and you hardly notice the difference with the loader.
I'll try to put some pics below.

Trouble is, the 424 doesn't have a "steering gear" below the steering wheel like your 434 does, the gear is in the upper bolster/front casting of the tractor below the radiator, and the shaft from the steering wheel runs all the way up there!

Thanks Mate, it was a lot of work actually. But very well worth it. I forgot, I even had to pull the steering joint apart on the front linkage and machine the taper down to the smaller size of the International. Something certainly not in any book, but did the job well.
As far as the steering different on American tractors? Sorry, never seen that. Had no idea they were different.

All the best
