I have a Payloader with the diesel fuel tank located below the engine. I have a small electric fuel pump to draw the fuel up to the injector pump for start up after machine has sat for a long period of time.
Question--The instructions say there should be a fuel filter between the tank and the electric fuel pump. Tank-up to filter - up to injector pump.
The little inline filters I am used to seeing are gravity fed.
Does the same filter work in the opposite direction or is there a special filter???? Thank you

What kind of engine & injection pump? What other filters are on the engine? No that little inline filter is not what you want.

you need a low micron filter before the injection pump. does not need to be before the lift pump.

how about you give us a little more and complete info so we can help you better.

Electric pump manufactures REQUIRE an inline filter be installed BEFORE the lift pump in order to keep trash out of it. They will work without it just may be short life.
Then on diesels you usually have a fuel / water separator filter before the injection pump and some even add another fuel filter there.

Seems to be a lot of confusion on this here lately for some reason ?

It would be good if you could install one of the Rayco water separators with the fuel filters inside of it. That would catch the water and trash and you could open the drain and remove the water settling out as needed between filter changes which will be less often with a separator in place. They are a little pricey at first but pay for them selves quickly in the fact they extend the fuel filter life greatly.

My CaseIH 7240 tractor has an in line filter in the 3/8" fuel line just before the lift pump. I suppose just to keep crap out of the pump. There are two spin on filters to protect the injector pump.

My CaseIH 5230 tractor originally had a sock in the tank at the bottom end of the pick up tube. A serial number break showed the sock omitted, and an in line filter just like the bigger tractor. So when I had the fuel tank off, I removed the sock, and installed a filter just like the bigger tractor.

This tractor is a CASE W 14 Payloader. There are 2 filters before the diesel injector pump. It also has a small electric fuel LIFT pump that has failed. I bought a new lift pump and the instructions says there needs to be a filter before the LIFT PUMP. JUST DON'T KNOW what to purchase. thank you

Just get one of the filters like on a 87 GMC or other auto filter that is metal, and not plastic. Run it before your electric fuel pump. Mine pump is still working.

What size fuel line do you have? On my above mentioned tractors, they're 3/8". The later serial number Magnum(7240) went to a 1/2" fuel line. I know I can find the part number for the 3/8". I might be able to find the part number for the 1/2". E-mail me if you want me to look as I might miss a reply from you on here.

Put a marine antisiphon valve at the tank and it will keep the fuel from draining back to the tank. If you're looking for a good filter, Racor makes a fuel filter/water separator unit that would work. Model number is Racor 500, and they make the filter elements in several different micron sizes. They're kind of pricey, about 200 bucks, but they're rugged and have been around danged near forever.

This one comes with a pre-filter.
