5' or 6" Bush Hog ?

I have a 38hp Massey, and have the opportunity to get a Bush Hog Rhino BH6. I have been currently been running a 5' cutter and need to know if the BH6 is too much for my 38hp. Any words of advice? Thanks!

A Rhino rotary cutter is not a Bush Hog®
That said, I run a heavy 6' Bush Hog brand
rotary cutter on my 38 hp Ford 3000.
I have enough HP to run it fine but it is
about all the poor tractor will heft.

Is the front of your tractor weighted? A well built 6 foot brush hog gets pretty heavy. A light duty one not so much.

Are you cutting 2 foot tall grass and minor saplings, or are you mowing down 5 foot tall swamp grass you can barely drive through?

You are kinda on either side of the question there, depending on what you plan to be doing 90% of the time and what duty rating the brush hogs
are, light, medium, or heavy.

I think you will be ok, but - it does depend what you expect out of it..........

My W4, 28 HP, runs a 6" mower in anything but cat-tails or really heavy stuff. Then I use the W6, 38 HP.

I run a 6 footer behind a MF50 gas. Works fine. I like to mow out the wheel track width.

Matching the mower with the tire width also makes mowing along fences and by trees easier to gauge.

PTO or engine HP?

38 PTO HP is enough to operate a (not too heavy) 6' cutter in most conditions if you do not need to cut the heavy stuff too quickly.

Stick with a 5' cutter if you are speaking of 38 engine HP.

Sorry , it is a Razorback

38 HP Engine
The Razorback isn't the heaviest duty of their cutters, but not a finishing mower either! Will be bushhogging roads and foodplots, maybe some light brush but nothing too bad!

I would get the 6 ft. I ran a 6 ft woods mower with my Ferguson TO20. In heavy stuff I just took a little less cut. When you think about it it's not a true 6ft. Probably more like 5 1/2 ft cut when you overlap the previous cut. 5 ft is more like 4 1/2 ft. That's the way I see it anyway. I now use my 6 ft mower on my Mf 235, and still need to take a little less cut in real heavy stuff. Stan

I would get the 6. No one says you HAVE to cut 6 feet all the time with it! If you get into some think stuff, then only make a half a pass!

I have run a 6 footer with a Ferguson TO-30, got it done just fine power wise, but was ALMOST too heavy!! :)

I run a Woods 84" behind a 38hp Massey Ferguson, in light stuff I cut the whole 7'. When I get into thicker stuff I move over a 1' or 2'. The Woods 84" is a 3 point, my tractor won't lift it with the top link hooked up so I just drag it around with the lower lift arms. In the video below I had the top link hooked up (I had just spent 6 months or so going through, and painting the tractor).

We bought a new 6 foot Bush Hog last year to use on our JD4600, 37 pto hp. It works OK, but I am using lower gears and burning more fuel, but I cut more per hour and do a better job. I can lift it with no problem, but we leave the loader on all the time.

Do you need to mow any hills? That's a lot of weight to run up an incline. If everything is flat you would be okay.

I have a 6' mower on my Farmall 504, horsepower is rarely an issue but I have to back up hills.

You need to go with the smaller one, not because you can't spin it or pick it up but because the lighter tractor was not built for the continuous torque on the PTO shaft and the internal gearing. You might get away with a bigger brush cutter but sooner or later you will need to replace some internal parts.
The hardest thing to cut with a brush hog is grass and thick weeds and all of that lugging will cause damage to something. You won't gain much cutting width with the wider cut. No matter how wide the cut you will always run over the weeds and grass first.

i use a 6 foot on my kubota L3400 it's around 35 HP it works great in normal cutting, i also have a loader and 4X4 but you could always add some front
weight if you don't have a loader

I have a Kioti SR 35 and it handles a 72 Inch Woods Brush Bull just fine and have no front trouble but it is front assist, Also have an old Woods 6 ft pull type and pull it with a Farmall B. Both well loaded in thick grass. I sold my 5 ft 3 pt as I did not need it
