Update:

Just sitting here reading the 'net and heard a few cans rattle in the back room. I went to inspect the sound and found a young 'possum (3 or 4 ponds) inspecting things. Picked it up by the tail.

Showed it to my son and he said it didn't look like the same one he has seen.

Anyway, relocated the'possum and all is quiet.

possum has more teeth than any other mammal - 50. There's a reason a Bobcat won't tackle them head-on! I wouldn't try that again if I were you.

2x4- Been doing it for years...no worries.

The bobcats we catch, those are the ones you should be wary of. They are ferocious!

I have caught several of them and coons by the tail, pus a mink! Was going to grab a Badger last year, but he told me I had better not! I listened to him, it was best we parted ways. lol

I would never try picking one up that way since they can and will curl up and bite you and then you stand a good chance of long and painful shots

old- I've been dealing with them my whole life and never have been bitten (Never say never...I know). But, if I see one starting to crawl up all I do is wriggle it around a little and it drops back down.

They are nasty critters though. But the youngins are cute!

I know they are fierce. Awakened one night by Bobcat screaming. He had a medium sized possum backed up against a telephone pole, facing the 'cat, with the possum's mouth wide open. Cat wouldn't attack face-to-face & was screaming to make the possum run so it could jump on its back & bite thru the neck, killing it. Bobcats can even kill deer in this manner. But that cat wasn't going to run into that mouthful of teeth!

A Possom can not bite you if its picked up by its tail unless you let it get too close to your leg,I've handled many that way.I've found them to be not very tough though a good size Rat Terrier or Jack Russel can knock one off in about 30 seconds.

Here's a little triva for you old timers. Possums and gray squirrls don't transmit rabies. I was carrying possums by the tail before my 9th birthday and was never bit. That play dead act is either involentary or possums are stupid because we whittled off a couple of them's balls while they played dead. Btw,hog hunting old man Cambell's truck was indeed possum cod blue.
