Where do I find IH low ash 30 wt oil? I have used it exclusively in my 706 gasser, and now been to 3 Case IH dealers in my area...100 miles...
And none carrys it. Noe what? What is a viable alternative?
Thanks, CMore

The only place you can get IH Low Ash oil will be a CNH dealer.

However pretty much any bulk oil distributor in your are should be able to get you low ash oil suitable for gas engine use. Look for an oil that has an ash content of .5% or less.

OK Gene, not all of us can have an airplane so where should he look for that? And Gene on sunday I hope you do not stay away because of that stupid decision on their part. Finnished at 6:30. Track was in perfect condition on wed evening if they would have left it alone to start with your size. Lester

Well i have NOT been to the local NEW Case I H what ever they call them selfs now so i do not know if they still have or can get it . Everybody around here is now calling the place the CATOLOG STORE since they have nothing ya need on hand and have to order it . Ya might get by usen Chevron Delo 100 . I myself have not tried it as we have a 55 gallon drum of low ash . Plus our 706 is down again with a piston out due to the gas that was delivered as it seams that the best we can now get is 90 octane straight gas and they are BLENDING in ALKI HOL to try and make 93 , well it ain't working . And i except that by the time we are done with filling the bunker 706 # 2 will be DOA . Just got done with doing a valve job on it due to one of the hired help putting in the wrong oil in it . He was just putting in the oil from the drum by the door and not getting it from the drum in the back. And i saw some light damage to the top of three pistons then .

all of your hd oils will be low ash... and syn oils will be NO ash.

back when these new oils were NOT available, and only single weight oils were sold, the origin of the well was important for ash, wax, and sulfur in the oil. Some wells were "sweet" and others were very dirty and corrosive oils. So pennsoil or north texas sweet were important sources for oils with low ash, low wax, right out of the ground.

Now due to extensive refining, all hd oils are low ash, low wax, low sulfur and have extreme wear additives, acid fighters and sludge fighters built in. The heavy paraffin and contaminates have been refined out. And viscosity extenders now make a oil act like 15 w at room temperature and 40 weight at 220 degrees so now a 15w-40 oil will give you better performance over a wider range of temperatures. These heavy duty high performance oils did not exist back in the 50s, 60s and even somewhat into the 70's

Most quality name brand oils are low ash, some are lower than others. A while back I saw formula breakdown of various oils, Castrol GTX was actually lower in ash content than the IH "low ash" oil. Penzoil was somewhat higher than both and so on.

IHC low ash is .5%

For some definition on Low ash oil, I asked Shell Oil Co. to discuss the ash level in current oil
My question was:

>I participate in a forum at Yesterdays Tractors. IH “Farmall” has
specified
>Low ash oil for use in its gasoline engines from the early 1960s. We are in a
>discussion as to whether the current Low ash diesel grade oils are
of the same
>intended (or unintended) ash levels. My family has been a
consistent user of
>Rotella Oils, and would like to be assured that if we used 15- 40
Rotella
>diesel oil in a 706 Farmall gasoline tractor, that it would meet the
same low
>ash intentions as the IH branded oil from the dealer.

Their reply follows:

Dear Sir,

The information we have for the Farmall 706 (gasoline) indicates it called for an API SF low ash oil (max 0.5% ) for viscosity ranges of 10w, 30w, and 5w-30. No information on higher viscosity ranges is listed in our reference. Rotella T 15w-40 meets API SM specifications for gasoline engines, which covers API SF, but has a maximum ash content of 1%.

Best Regards,

In 20 some years I have never blown a piston our 4020 or 3020 gas jobs. These tractors are not babied. Sounds like you need to switch colors or find a better mechanic.
