1086 TA and shifting (clutch maybe)

To whom may help guide me, I recently bought an IH 1086 diesel and I love it. Have a few question though. I don't know what year it is. Looked up the serial number and no results. After the U its 013636. 78 or 81year model or other. Also I use it mainly for haying. Well I took the old dog for a little ride tonight cuz hes sick and won't be around much longer, I put the TA on and now its stuck and won't allow me to take it out of the TA off. Also the shifter, High Low SETTINGS, Either Low or high sometimes on its own while driving it will pop out of gear and the shifter will bounce until I put it back in gear. Also when I put it in park in lowest idle once I take my foot off of the clutch I can hear some bad grinding underneath me. Once I hear that grinding I put the clutch in and re do the putting it in park and it's better. Anyone have any idea on what may be up with it? Haying this year has been a year from Hell with breakdowns, but I want to know what may be up so I can get this awesome beast fixed. Thanks. If it helps my e-mail is [email protected].

I think you bought someone's else's headaches....
The 86 series Internationals have a terrible reputation for the clutches, TA's, and transmissions

The TA detent roller behind the dash might need to be lubed up. Shine a bright flashlight in the TA lever slot and you will see a roller under the TA lever. Shoot penetrating oil down in there and then work the lever up and down.

The shifting problem sounds like linkage under the cab floor needs to be freed up and lubed. The linkage inside the transmission cover probably needs to be replaced. I wouldn't say the 1086 had terrible clutch, TA, transmission problems. My 1086 has 17000 hours . I bought it new so I obviously know it's history. It is not a perfect tractor, it's been apart a few times, but it is far from troublesome. It does need a new clutch every 5000 hours, I wouldn't call that a weak spot. The shifting linkage in the tranny cover has been replaced twice, that adds up to 8000 hours of life for the shifting linkage and I could have gone another couple thousand hours before replacement but I don't let things go that far. It sounds to me like your 1086 has been sitting around for awhile and some linkage rusted up. Pull the floor out of the cab and play around with the shifting linkage. That will give you an idea of what you are dealing with.

Well with the T/A problem of not want to shift back up i would pull the dash cowl and lube the linkage and see if that fixes it , you may have to install a new cable . Now as to your HI LOW shifter your problem is in the top cover of the range transmission . You have a broken detent spring and probably missing shift roller . NOW with the grinding noise of park this can be major as this can if it has not already messed up the REV drive gear . The park loc Pawl drops into this gear and is spring loaded and has a nasty habit of tearing off gear teeth when either dropped into park while still moving or if the shifter does not get into netural . this is a major tear down to repair because the rear end must come out from under the cab and a complete tear down of the rear end is required as the gear that needs to be replaced is the LAST gear out and the first back in . Fixing the range cover is also a pain to get to because you have to take out the floor boards and seat and work almost standing on your head. Did one last year that turned into a night mare because the pin that holds the park lok to the stand had come three quarters of the way out and would not allow the range cover to come up and out . A four hour job turned into 9 and a half hours.

Since you are a new user here I can tell you Tractor Vet's advice on the old IH's is among the best there is.

AMONG the best there is. Pete, you and Owen are right up there on the top also as far as IH knowledge goes. I was just trying to reassure the poster TV isn't just blowing smoke.
