Electric tach..gas tractor

Old gas MF50. Changed generator to alternator 20 years ago. The old tack was cable driven off the back of the Generator. Now just a hole in the dash.

I'd like to fill that hole in the dash with an electric tach. Lots of tachs will fit the hole, but what is the best, easiest and simplest but accurate input to the tach?

The tachometer should have instructions with it, but if I remember right, the input for the tach is connected at the coil, on the distributor side. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I got one from Summit Racing - VDO- - fits 4, 6 or 8 cyl. Connects to the coil and ground. I saw a suggestion a few months ago to get a marine tach to be sure it's water proof. No problems with mine.

That would mean a new alternator, cable and hourmeter/ tach...about $200. A $50 electric tach would do what I want.

Are you looking for a digital tachometer or an analog unit? The reason I ask is most automotive tachs range up to 7,000 or 8,000 rpm. You would need a 270 degree sweep before an 7,000 rpm tach would be very useful on a 2,000 rpm engine (only 77 degree needle movement at full rpm). A +/-2 percent of full range accuracy would be +/-140 rpm anywhere on the scale. Spending an extra $100 for an original style tachometer with an hour meter might be worth it in the long run.

I got one from J. C. Whitney several years ago for my FE35. It's 0 to 4,000. It was fairly simple to install where the original was. Works fine. TDF

I purchased a simple battery powered tack. Wire goes around spark plug wire. Very accurate, but not round to fit in your hole. If you go with a wire tack, make sure you can replace the battery. The first one I purchased you couldn't replace the battery and in less than a year it was junk. I got mine off ebay or amazon.
