JD 950;anyone have one?

I can buy a JD 950 with 1000 hrs from the original owner. It's 2wd,p/s with typical faded JD paint. Will it function well as a chore tractor? Any drawbacks?

They are a tough as nails smaller tractor. If you use it like a you would an Ford 2n or 8n you will be fine. They are actually have a great diesel motor if it is two wheel drive without Power steering it very well could not have live PTO. So it would be just like the older Fords and Fergusons just with a better motor. The JD 950 is around 27 PTO horse power.

I have the 4 wheel drive. use post hole digger, back blade. brush hog, has a loader but no power steering but I make it work.uses very little fuel and I am well satis fied with it

I have a Yanmar YM 330 which is almost the exact same tractor as the JD 950,2WD
2 speed PTO, 2 wheel drive,LPTO.I use it to cut and rake hay sometimes, good tractor with my 6ft finish mower.HOYE Tractor a "grey market" Yanmar parts supplier is catching up the slack on officially US sold Yanmars and some of the JD models where they are dropping the ball with parts.

I have a 1000 hour JD 855 4WD with a no. 70 loader. IF you use a loader or a blade you will you will want 4WD. Mine has turf tires on it and it is helpless in 2WD. If you had bar tires and weighted it up it might be OK. Just my 2cts worth.
They are dandy tractors and as stated before, really tough. I LIKE it.

My dad had a 950 2wd with a loader for approx 20 years. Ours had no p/s or live pto. It was a very dependable tracor, very good on fuel, needed tires loaded to be much good with the loader. It has a non syncro transission with a high /low range. In The low range, reverse and 1 and 2 were really low geared. P/s would be a big plus- ours steered hard in soft ground with the loader. Depending on the chores you have in mind , it should be a good little tractor.Even though itwas always stored inside we had to block the clutch down if it sat for more than a few days or it would stick to the flywheel. That was the only issue we ever had with it. They were made in late 1970s and early 1980s for JD by Yanmar.

I have the smallest of the 50 series compact tractors the 650 which is the tiny brother to the 950 and love it it is 4wd and I haven't got it stuck yet it may only have 16 Hp but it can pull some logs
