VAC Case Pull Start Only

I finally got my VAC running. The points were not opening up. Problem I'm having now is it will rarely start with the starter, but pops right off when towing it. I am not seeing any spark at the points when turning it over with the starter. Would this suggest a bad coil or condensor? And it seems to stall pretty easily on low rpm. Battery is charged.

What do you think the problem is?

Thank you,

Get a multimeter. 1st measure voltage at the battery. Then hit the starter button and measure voltage at the battery. Then measure voltage at the starter switch, then at the starter. If voltage is a good 12 volts at all of those places, then its the starter.

6 or 12 volts?? If 12 volts do you have a ballast resister in the ignition circuit?? If you do try a jumper across the resister and see if it starts up. Also a starter drawing to many amps will cause that problem

Maybe an or armature. Or do you by chance have auto type battery cables on it?? If yes to small and not letting enough amps go where they need. Battery cables need to be 0 or 00

Use a set of good #2 copper wire jumper cables. Hook the black one to the negative battery terminal and the other end to where that cable ends. Hook the red cable to the positive battery terminal and the other red to where that cable ends. (I don't know if positive ground or not, so I didn't use those terms.) This adds to the current carrying capacity of the cables. If it starts, the original cables are too small. ^v really needs 0gauge cables. A battery load check will point to a faulty battery. Jim

Yeah I think they were set a little wide. I set them right at .020 tonight. I'm gonna have the starter checked soon. I'm not too handy with the multimeter.
