OT Back on pipeline work this week

I was working last week on a plant that liquifies, stores and vaporizes natural gas, looks like another couple of weeks. They are replacing the units that vaporize the gas and put it back in the pipeline. The plant needs to be back online by the end of September, and the weather feels like it is moving in fast. I have to get this done so I can go to Duluth on another installation and work before winter.

After dealing with a natural gas transmission pipeline explosion on the property about a year ago, I realize now, how dangerous and precise that kind of work is. Like it or not, we live in North America, and it gets cold here in the winter time. Our lifestyles have brought us to the luxuries and dependencies of pipelines and the companies that bring it to us.

Better you than me working on that type of stuff. I would either go BOOM!!! or totally shut everything down. LOL Have a good week.

The pipelines have been around since the 30s, they are much safer now than ever. The safety of the pipeline really depends on the commitment of the owner to safety. I do not work for companies that I am not sure about their commitment to it. Accidents do and always will happen, but proper safety reduces the risk considerably.

All the combustibles have been locked out and evacuated for the construction work to commence. I would expect early next week we will get clearance to bring them back into the system. This is the first time I have worked with LNG, so pretty interesting. All the valves and pumps are cryogenic because the liquid is -260F. The vaporizers will bring it up to about 60F and it will expand 625 times in volume. I think it takes about 3 days to get everything cooled down enough to work and test.

No doubt about new lines, modern technology and PHMSA. However my concern is the aging infrastructure of the lines put in the 40's, 50's and 60's that are well beyond their useful life....

I too work in pipeline industry, maintaining existing lines. I had some that were put in around the 40's and 50's. With the cathodic protection system that is required on lines and gas analysis and chemical treatment, does wonders. We made some taps on the lines and inspected the piece that was taken out and on occasion still had the writing on the inside wall from installation.
