1969 Camille (the second strongest hurricane to ever hit the U.S.) struck the coast of Mississippi at the town of Waveland on the morning of August 18th.
It push a wall of water estimated to be 24 feet tall (storm surge) inland as it came onshore with 175 mph winds.

By August 22 Camille was already off the east coast in the Atlantic and down graded to a subtropical storm.
