John Deere 544G

Happen to look at a 544G for sale and noticed it had a 4 speed electic shift torque converter type transmission. Are these transmissions deere built? I looked at case 921, it also had a 4 speed electric transmission and looked very similar to the deere. When running this type of transmission, do you set it at one of the speeds and trans automatically shifts as needed? Is there anything in particular that goes out on these type of transmissions? We currently run a 544B, but would like to step up in a year or two to this type of loader. The G looks to be a much better built and a whole lot easier to service than the old B. The machine I looked at had 17,000 hours, looked clean and well maintained. Thanks for any information.

I am pretty sure the 544G uses a ZF four speed transmission, I know the later series do. The 544B uses a 4 speed Allison transmission. I don't have experience with 544G, but I do have a 544J, on it the transmission has two modes manual shift or automatic.

think they,re german built,,it will stay in whatever gear you select, but it may have an auto option then it will shift automatically,,,torque converter usually goes first,,if that many hrs its been rebuilt sometime I reckon,,,

Thanks for the information, I don't know if they made an early or late 544B, but I think our 544B only has a 2 speed, low and high, I have never felt it shift in those two gears.

The specs in the owners manual showed them as a four speed, but I know what you mean, the shift between 1-2 and 3-4 were so smooth that I didn't realize there were two gears in each selection our 544b.
