A friend has a flea problem in a house. I have not dealt with it (infestation) just an occasional one on a pet. Usually put medicine on pet and that was that. looks like those house fumigator bomb things or an exterminator. any ideas on this one?

The active ingredient Bifinthrin is about the best material out there for general use insecticide. Many of the Ortho Home Defense products use this material. The issue with fleas (and many insect pests) is the egg and pupa stages are very hardy and even the strongest insecticides will not impact those life stages of the insects well. Getting ahead of the infestation requires repeat applications as the insects develop from the egg to larvae and the pupa to adult stages. Spray to kill the adults and larvae and spray again to kill adults and larvae that were eggs and pupa when you sprayed before, weekly applications until control is gained, might require 3-4 weeks.

Repeated lite sprays to carpets/rugs and furniture until control is gained. The bombs can create problems with furniture finishes and such as they get on everything exposed but not necessarily under furniture and such which is also where the fleas are. Move the furniture around and get all of the floor covering.

Just went through this with vacation house. Got here and was getting carried away. Whenever there was a bad winter they seem to be worse. 3rd time since I've owned the place for 20 yrs that I have had a problem. Usually bomb the house and bathe dogs and the problem is gone. This time, really slowed it down but still finding a couple a day. I usually treat the yard around the house too. House sits empty over the winter and seems like the cold winters bring in mice and they bring the fleas. Caught 11 mice Memorial weekend in 4 days. I may have to bomb again.

I have also heard of root cause of flea problems inside was in the soil under structures on pier and beam. Maybe some hose end applicator and a good insecticide and soak the soil. Problems would be reaching all areas under the house and repeat applications. The bombs might have some use in that area if there was underpinning.

Lose the carpet you will get rid of the fleas.Been there done that. Had bug guy tell me to vacum the carpet everyday will heip.

Diatamatious Earth. It's a clay like powder, available at places like TSC in a 50 pound bag. Sprinkle it in the carpet and furniture, leave it for a few days then vacuum it up.

A couple days ago Old made a post about diatomaceous earth. Some responders suggested it can be sprinkled on the carpet to kill fleas. You vacuum it back up a few days later.

Sounds strange. But I was told this by an older man.Pan of water on the floor. They will jump in and drown. Also put some glue boards for mice on the floor. They will jump on and get stuck. Tried it in my apartment no more fleas. Took about two weeks but the fleas are gone.

You gotta follow the flea and tick stuff to the letter- the dawg has to be treated every month without fail for the stuff to work. If you don't, the eggs that are there hatch and you have a new litter of fleas laying more eggs.....

we get them very bad. i tried the spray bombs, no avail, what works, is ive found flea dip for cats and dogs, that mixes with water and doesnt rinse off. i mixed it to spec and put it in a spray bottle and sprayed all the carpets, along the walls, even bare floors. it works great, and i dont get ran out of the house from toxic sprays. the dip i use is made by hartz. try it, this will work.

Just went thru this again this year. We put pets on porch AFTER flea collars and stuff between the shoulders, put a few different styles of bombs out (1 claimed good for killing eggs while another claimed larvae and another claimed long lasting ect ect), propped chairs and couch up to let fog underneath, turned off any and all pilot lites. While directions suggests to not overdue it I can't help but over-engineer it. If 4 are good then 6 are gooder!!! Fired them off and went away for few hours, next day vacuumed then powdered carpets and bombed porch and started washing anything that needed it (dishes and such). Yes the fog gets almost everywhere.
The next 2 weeks, repeat.
Did basement and crawl space, first and second floors.

Best part besides no fleas is haven't seen a spider in weeks LOL

Funny part is outdoor cats didn't have any. They were shoulder stuff done any ways.

I told SWMBO I didn't want her friend inside the house any more as we didn't have fleas until she came around last year and again this year. Coincidence maybe but no problem till she knowing her.

Borax is what the "poison free" pros use. Plain old 20 mule team Borax from Walmart.
1, Vacuum at least once per week to get eggs and larvae.
2, after vacuuming, walk around with Borax in a flour sifter and dust it lightly everywhere, especially where the critters sleep, around the baseboards and under furniture.

I did this weekly in summer when I lived where fleas survive, and it always worked. This works outside too, until it gets wet.
The Boric acid crystals physically abrade the insect's shell and it dehydrates. They cannot develop an immunity to it. Also kills roaches and any other crawlers

I'll jump on the Borax wagon. We got them in the house once, several years ago, and Borax sprinkled around on the carpet, and around the edges of the rooms had them under control in short order.
