Utility Tractors

I guess these new 4 tier diesel tractors have a particulate filter on them that cost $4-$5,000 to replace. This is on a 40-50 hp utility tractor. John Deere didn't mention this until I asked about it. They say they're good for 4-5 thousand hours though, depending how hard the tractors has been run. Is this true about these filters? I heard Mahindra does not use them on their tractors though. I don't know. Your thoughts about buying new on a tractor that would get used less than 100 hours per year?

This the filter for JD 5045E-5075E. I have no idea if & when it needs to be replaced.
RE567056 Diesel Particulate Filter - DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER 1,514.48 USD

Mahindra uses the exhaust filters on 26 hp and above.
If you want a new utility tractor above 25 hp, you are basically stuck with the exhaust filters. If you minimize idling, and actually work the tractor, and follow the owners manual and let the tractor regen the filter when it is supposed to,the filters will last 5000 plus hours. As more tractors are sold,I'm reasonably certain there will be an exchange program in place for the filters. One thing to bear in mind that cleanliness under the hood will be a must. The filters get very hot and any build up of seeds, chaff, grass will cause a fire. Checking for birds/mouse nests, dried grass will be a part of the daily startup procedure while you are checking the oil and coolant levels.

Seems like I read someplace a new Massey-F. MF4610 Lo-Pro in the 80 Hp / 99 Hp range or so, has no filter and meets Tier 4i. No filter.

I just bought a 105 horsepower CaseIH 105c is tier 4 and has no particulate filter nor does it use def fluid.

What year did this start I have a 2011 5101 and I didn't know about this either where is it at what does it look like thanks for the imfo

ya, pretty much the way it is today over 25hp.
I bought a new orange 33hp tractor last spring 2014..and I almost waited too long. last of the non-tier 4's
My local dealer had just 2 left, different models in crates in his building.
He was resisting other dealers clamoring for them and was saving them for regular customers.
I traded my 7 year old one in and bought one, because I didn't want anything that has to be heated to 1200 degrees regularly for cleaning, and I didn't want the computer to monitor it.
Hopefully by the time this tractor wears out, they will think of a better solution.

If other tractor manufacturers can pass emission standards on the new Tier 4 engines without particulate filters, why can't JD do that?

For the moment, yes.

That said, Tier IV I will soon be a thing of the past at 60 HP and above.

Once any credits are used up, all such tractors will use DEF very shortly.

Thanks, feds.

In keeping with the "yesterdays tractors" theme of this website, there are no such issues with old iron.

I guess there are lots of places on the 'net, though, to whine about the new "green" (plastic) politically-correct stuff. (Just say'in, please don't shoot the messenger!)

JD must have taken a lesson from the European auto makers: After you buy a new unit from them, you will find out later that you will be "buying it again" at the parts counter.

I'm sure the DEF isn't cheap either. Maybe this is why I see older tractors selling for more money than newer....

We have learned, diesels with filters, do not idle them! My Freightliner with the Cummins has 193000 miles on it. If it idles it will set the check engine light and the mileage will drop to 5 MPG down from 7MPG. When the purge system kicks in, it goes down to 3 or 4 MPG. That is what you have to look forward to.(no DEF)

There is a Tier 4 interim which does not have the filters but tier 4 final which is kicking in now will have all that crap on them. Apparently all mfg's will have to have it all.

Kinda like the Agco we have 75o dollars for a complete set of filters to service it . and then there's are famall 110a that is 6 months old and the dealer doesn't even stock filter for it still waiting for a hydraulic filter that's been back ordered for 3 weeks and I can't use an aftermarket filter or I lose the warranty .
