Apple cider vinegar

I'm experiencing a nasty fight with barber pole worms in my
sheep and lambs. Necropsy results confirm I've got a problem
with resistance to conventional dewormers (I have been
switching back and forth between cydectin and ivermectin the
past few years). I am also in the process of switching to
dorpers and katahdins which are not experiencing the
parasite problems like my wool crosses are. The vet has
recommended trying pure apple cider vinegar to combat the
problem. Anyone currently using Apple cider vinegar as a
dewormer with success? I have been reading up on it and I
like the idea of getting away from chemical dewormers.
Thoughts?

The only trouble with vinegar is if the animal has any wounds. Gonna be a lot of hootin and holerin !!

#1- Forget Ivermectin all together for sheep as far as barber pole goes.

#2- I had lousy luck with Cydectin.

#3- I had much better luck with Valbazen and am now using Levamisole.

#4- Don't believe the hoopla about Katahdin and Dorpers or any of the hair breeds being "worm resistant". SOME lines/animals appear to have a heightened resistance but by no means are all hair breeds any more resistant than wool breeds.

#5- AC vinegar might help, so can copper boluses, so can diatamaceous earth (sp), garlic, pumpkin seed and a host of other "home remedies". The best cure is an effective wormer and a clean pasture with a rotation program. Even then you have brain worms, liver flukes, white muscle, mineral deficiencies, etc. to contend with. I've been running Katahdin/Dorper crosses for several years now and it's a new learning experience every year.

#6- Take a FAMACHA course and learn to worm only the animals that need it and do it right. One adequate dose followed by another 18-20 days (not more than 21 days) later. Sheep will always have some worm load. Dosing the whole herd whether they need it or not is what creates super worms.

#7- This is the best sheep forum I've found so far- http://edgefieldsheep.com/bb/index.php

First off thank you for the reply. You are right I've had sheep
for years and years now and you do learn something new
every year. I rotate pastures sometimes moving critters daily
and I was only worming once a year just before lambing and u
was only worming lambs who were anemic and looked poor. I
thought I was doing everything right yet I've managed to
create super worms. I'm not naive enough to believe that all
hair sheep are parasite resistant however right now their the
only ones who have red eyelids. I went through and culled all
the wool ewes who were still anemic and from now on I plan
to only put replacements in the flock who come from ewes
who show resistance. Thanks again for the sheep forum info.
That's good to know as nobody in my area raises sheep so it
is good to know about as many resources as possible.
