Computer help..............

Does anyone know of a good spam blocker on Yahoo email? There should be one built into the computer, but I can't find it.

My wife's desktop accumulates over 100 spam messages a day. My identical desktop rarely lets a spam message get through. According to Glasswire, my wife's desktop is also using about four times the bandwidth per day as mine, yet she isn't on the 'Net that much more than I.

I can't help but think there must be a connection between the spam messages and the bandwidth usage.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Yahoo mail basically has it's own Spam folder. Are you referring to an ad blocker or pop up blocker for your web browser?

100 messages per day is nothing, you shouldn't see any difference in bandwidth used because of that. Either she is watching a lot of videos or her computer has some kind of malware/virus (far more likely).

As far as reducing spam, I'd consider switching to gmail, it has much better filters than Yahoo. Keep the Yahoo account for websites that insist on you giving an email address to sign up but only give the new account to people you trust.

Goose, I agree with Tom "her computer has some kind of malware/virus (far more likely)." and "Keep the Yahoo account for websites that insist on you giving an email address to sign up but only give the new account to people you trust."

If you are on cable or DSL your computer is on the internet all the time. It is a common misunderstanding that people think they are not on-line / internet unless they have their browser open. Even if the browser is closed, you have programs that are talking back to servers 24x7. Any software you install, always do a "custom" install and remove all the checks from the boxes that are to do with updates or anything. HP printers are really big hogs on talking to HP all the time.

As for your email, just as Tom said, use the yahoo for ordering products or joining forums. Many places will sale your email address to others and then you get there junk.

Always remember, Nothing is Free.... when you download that free card game..... you get much more than you see. You have to ask yourself, is this just a nice person that pays to have a website to give everyone free stuff?

So to contradict my self, there is a couple of free programs that work pretty good. Malware Bytes and SuperAnti Spyware, you can download them from Major Geeks. But be slow to click on stuff on that site too, some is junk. I would install them and run them and then un-install them. If you have too many scan programs running, it will slow your pc down. You should have some kind of anti-virus / spyware protection on your pc and keep it up to date - two good ones are McAfee and Norton - best to stay with the anti-virus / spyware version of either. If you get the Internet Security version, it will slow the pc down as they do too much scanning. AVG is a free one that is ok also.

I think you will find your wife pc has a bunch of junk running and talking to the internet.

Hope this Helps
Michael
