Broken windmill ???????

I've got a three legged windmill at the farm & the head is laying on the ground & cows had rubbed against it & walked on it for years before I bought the place. My wife & I guess myself a little bit would like to see it go round & round again. It doesn't have to pump water. Just go round & round. Is there any windmill experts out there or any talk boards that I could find parts on. I think it is a Dempster. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Gerald

If the cows have been walking on the fan it's not going to stay together long. You could erect it and leave the tail furled. They are not made to run without a load. Maybe with a light enough spring you could make it ornamental. But you need a good wheel. It probably has babbitt bearings.

A windmill is something I have always wanted but never have found one that was not over priced. Would love to have it working to pump water to my horses and goats so I would not have to use electric power to do it

If allowed to run with no restriction, it will destroy itself in the first storm. Making a wheel with vanes and using a trailer spindle will be better if free to spin. use 16 gauge metal, don't pitch the blades very flat, make it turn slow in a high wind. 8 foot is plenty. Jim

I can't even find most of the wheel parts. The head is there & part of the tail but it is bent. Is it possible to get a head, wheel, & tail off of a salvage windmill some where. Gerald

Friend of mine has restored many windmills. I think he has put up six or so old mills on his museum site. Takes them down from farms and rebuilds and puts them back to work at his museum. Give me a call and I can give you his number...605.881.3042....E SD.

I have an 8 foot Dempster wheel and I think there is even a head here. You pay to ship it or come get it and you can have it. I KNOW I have 2, 8 foot Aermotor heads, but no fans, or tails.
A Dempster was never know to be very reliable in this part of the world.

We used windmills at all of our pastures. I still remember coming home one day from school and the bill had come from having the head rebuilt on one. No fan or tail repair- just gearbox stuff. The total was $600. This was probably 35 years ago. I would like to put one here at the home place in the bull pen, but I so vividly remember that bill and the stir it caused. It's lots easier to turn on the hydrant once a day.

Look them up on the net there is tons of sites. Might have to get a new head (aermotor 802) keep old one for antique.
