Starter windings

I am changing the starter out on MH 44 to a spare one that I have. The insulation on the wires going to the field coils is missing in some places. Is there a shellac or something I can put on them?

A good quality hi-temp silicone like permatex works and you can spread it on with a small paintbrush. Just make sure the copper is clean and may even rough it up with a scratch pad.

They make a brush on insulation just for that. I have it in the shop, but can't remember the name of it. Varnish will work too with many coats. Just make sure the windings aren't shorted together.
