My favorite part of the County Fair......

Every one else focuses on tractors, the accordion jamboree is my favorite part of the fair. It usually runs about an hour and a half with good old time polka music.

You can't see the tuba players face, but I think he's played his tube with every polka band in the east half of Nebraska, maybe beyond. And he does vocals in English, German, and Czech, sometimes all three in the same number.

My sister used to play her accordion in this event, but she moved 75 miles west to Grand Island, and seems to be too busy to come anymore. She's an 83 year old widow, and gives piano lessons, accordion lessons, plays her accordion in a polka band when she has time and the inclination, she's substitute organist for several churches, goes around to the Veteran's Home in Grand Island and nursing homes both in Grand Island and surrounding towns and plays her accordion to entertain the residents, and maybe some other things I haven't heard of. She's probably older than a lot of the residents she entertains at the Vet's Home and the nursing homes. Like I said, she's 83 and I don't know if I'd want to try to keep up with her.

Wish I was there. It's one of my favorite types of music. I've played accordion since 5 and tuba, trombone, and other brass instruments most of my life, and I played in some polka bands when I lived in Michigan. Not enough time now.

Too bad there are empty chairs in that room.

It's always good to hear a polka band that has a tuba. So many bands have dropped the tuba for bass guitar, or the bass is played on an electronic accordion. There's no substitute for real "oom paa."

HAPPY MUSIC FOR HAPPY PEOPLE.

I miss Big Joe Siedlik. He used to emcee a lot of the Polka events in the area for many years. Was that the Seward County Fair? I heard that they had a free event this weekend with the Peterson Farm Bros. I would have liked to have went and seen them.
