e-bay item return

sold an item on e-bay that went for almost what a new one would cost. Buyer has requested to return it (they will pay shipping) as they claim it doesn't fit. (item was clearly described as to what it fit). E-bay says I don't have to accept the return. Any comments as whether to accept the return or deny it.( PayPal has nicely frozen the funds until dispute is resolved ). Bill

One question - is the buyer telling you it will not fit something you had listed, or something else?
Something is not right here. I never expect consistency from eBay but they say you don't have to
accept the return and then froze your money until you accept the return.

listed part for specific baler, buyer says it doesn't fit. Ebay gives several options up to and including denial of return.

The funds for this transaction will be unavailable until this return has been closed. You can also use these funds to issue a refund. You must issue a refund within 6 business days of the item being delivered.

Comments: We received the item but it does not fit the baler .

The buyer pays for return shipping, and we'll provide them all the return details. Just wait to get the item back before you refund the buyer.

You fully refund the buyer to close this request. The buyer keeps the item.

I sold an item on e-bay and the buyer didn't pay. I re-listed the item and got about $300 less than what he bid. E-bay wouldn't even let me leave feedback for this deadbeat. Haven't listed anything with e-bay since.

If the part should fit the balers you listed then I would say tough luck and decline. If there is a possibility it was not listed correctly then refund it after you get the part back.

Now my advise is to dump selling on EBay. You will get burned sooner or later selling on there. They have stacked the deck too far in the buyers side for me to feel safe selling anything through them any longer.

This is a no brainer . The buyer saw a new one for about what he paid for the used one. Got to talking with his buddies and changed his mind. Now wants his money back, and stick you without the item. Has his cake and eat it too.

Just like local auctioneers, E-bay depends on happy buyers to keep their profits flowing, so in disputes they tend to give the buyer the benefit of the doubt. If the buyer is willing to pay the return shipping, I will give them a refund, that way we both loose a little in the deal gone bad.

I work in an auto parts warehouse, and deal with many returns of all kinds. Been doing it for over 30 years. In addition, I've bought a lot of junk on e-bay, and sold a little. My take on it is this: This guy probably wouldn't have gone through the bother of getting it online and paying for it if he didn't think it would work. Obviously he has a problem with it. If he is paying the shipping both ways, and you get it back in the same condition you sent it, give him his money back. You can sell it again to someone else. He's already out the time and shipping, and I doubt he did it all just to aggravate you, and waste both your time on the transaction.
Wait till you get it back, and refund his money.

I have an ebay store. When the buyer returns something. The seller has to refund the original shipping.

I put a restocking fee on all my items. That way if the seller returns the item I will get most of the shipping back.

If the buyer wants to play dirty. He can open a item not as described case and force you to give a full refund including shipping.

He can also break the item and claim shipping damage. Ebay policy states sellers are responsible for shipping damage. The seller has to give full refund plus pay return shipping.

Every business has returns not just ebay sellers so whats the big deal? If Walmart or Lowes closed up shop because of one return how many would be in business?

I would accept the return ...eat the shipping and move on
Just 2 months ago i made $150 on four items that i picked out of somebodys trash.

I might be wrong but if you refuse to take item back buyer keeps it and gets a refund!!!! (you are out of item and money) The dispute system used to be buyer sent item back and got refund. at least you got item back. Exception might be if its a small very low value item and you don't want it. What I don't like is buyer buys item and can get a refund for any reason. (as JD seller said).

Talk to the buyer, have them return it, then refund the money.
Be pleasant, but reasonable to yourself at the same time.
eBay/PayPal WILL give the buyer the money back one way or
the other, so you might as well get your item back and positive
feedback out of it.

BTW, if the seller returns it damaged, they still get their money
back because they returned it and the tracking says you got it.
Even if they put it in writing that it was fine when they got it
and they broke it on purpose out of frustration. BTDT.

like the other posters say.
Ya can't win this one Bill.
Take this option and hope it isn't broken....

I sell on ebay and have learned to bite the bullet as to the customer is always right. However your return policy was spelled out before the auction. He should never have even asked for a return if you had a no return policy. So if it was me I would deny the return [ although I allow all returns uo to 14 days] . Your return policy was clearly stated before the auction . If you feel that you may risk bad feedback ; it would be erased by ebay as you had a clear No Return policy.
