My neighbor bought a 1958 gas fergy and the gears grind when he shifts it and also it grinds when he engages the PTO . Looking at the clutch pedal shaft , it appears that the adjustment is by loosening the clamp on the shaft and turning the clutch shaft itself and then re-tighten the clamp . I'm I right on this process?

That only adjusts free play in pedal before it starts ingaging pressure plate. The proper way to adjust is on the bench before installation but you can do it through inspection plate hole if you know what you are doing.

Yes, that is where you adjust the pedal free play. Thinking the book calls for 3/4" between the pedal and the
bottom of the stop. You can adjust it a little tighter, just don't want the release bearing riding on the
clutch.

Some grinding is normal. If you push the clutch and immediately try to put it in gear, the transmission is
still spinning, so it will grind on the first try. Setting the idle down will help.
