John Deere b clutch noise.

So...... I've done just about everything to model b but have small problem with the clutch. I've been trouble shooting it past few days ? Every time you disengage it at idle speed hit makes s sound as if drive disc is hitting outer face pad? I've checked to see if it warped and cracked but nothing shows signs or this. The clutch is dry no oil inside .Noise is like rattle or rubbing noise as if it comes from outer clutch pad or in that General area? My IT Manuel says nothing about a clutch bearing, so don't really know much on that? Anyone have similar troubles ? as this? I've ordered all new outer and inner disc to replace to see helps...

The clutch has to be greased as it is a bushing and if it has not been serviced it probably is dry, You need a good manual to guide you along thru this.

Had 2 cylinder tractors for 50 years and never heard of that. The clutch parts that need lube get it from the first reduction gear cover that has its own drain plug. And in that time had several of them apart. You will not find a grease fitting in there and if there was you would have to dismantle the tractor to get to it. He needs to look on left side of tractor instead of right for the noise maker as he will probably find the flywheel is not snuged up as it should be and that lets the crank move sideways just a tiny fraction of an inch and that will make that noise as well as hard to adjust the clutch. 38A, 46B, 49B, 50AR &51A.

Yeah , its a big skinny bearing that runs when the clutch is released and you are stationary.Better to put trans in neutral and engage clutch when idling . It's next to the case behind all the clutch parts .

Thanks for the advice ....... It just started week so ago clicking and rattle back fourth ........ Like was a clutch disc
Loose or dirty making it hit after a rotation around?

May be as simple as the pulley brake needs adjusted tighter so as the pulley does not go back too far when disengaged as to pinch the back facing again.
I'd also take it apart, grease the bearing and check for broken facings which can be VERY dangerous. If broken they can stack in there wedging the clutch tight which means you won't be able to stop when most needed to.

I still say check that flywheel, just starting makes me think that flywheel is starting to move out on the crank and when that happens it gives too much play in clutch disks and with too much play they will rattle. I forget the model of your tractor but if it has a closed flywheel then there is a nut on the end of the crank to use to tighten up that end play, now an open flywheel tractor does not have that nut and is harder to get flywheel tight. You need to find a way to put pressure on clutch end of crank to hold it tightly to the left while you drive in the flywheel, with out holding the right end of crank then the crank moves to right as you try to push flywheel in and you think you are getting it moved but you actually are not. It may be only like .005 clearance and do that, doesent have to be enough you can see movement in crank. We had that same thing on a couple of them. One was the 49B, other the 38A. The closed flywheel it is easy to get to the flywheel bolts to tighten but on the open flywheel the bolts are on the back side where there is not enough room to get a wrench in and Deere made special wrenches for that, A &G you could do with normal wrench but not the B and that was one special twisted in many ways to get in there wrench. That end play is first thing to be checking and only then but you need the clutch apart when checking that end play do you start to put the clutch back together and while you are doing that you can tell if there is any ware on anything in there. The bolts that the adjustment are done with are very prone to wear and when they do they get a notch that catches the clutch operating parts in and you cannot get the clutch dissenguaged and you better hope you have the opertunity to kill the engine as that is the only way you will stop the tractor when that happens. Luckily hours was battery ignation with a switch to stop the engine. Those flywheels have been known to slide completely off the end of the crank while engine was running. and they will travel hundreds of feet before they will stop and there had better be nothing in their way or it is destroied. Heard of one flywheel that went in a swamp never to be able to be recovered.

Hello mr Leroy .

I've did some looking into the flywheel .. I think it's tight enough I don't see any play in it what so ever?now do you think it might be bearings or something of that nature making that noise? I've took clutch disc out and checked everything but not yet removed the whole pully yet. I plan to pull it off this week and check some more the drive gear and clutch forks all look good on the inside I've checked all of that ? Maybe is a bushing or something? I bought this tractor from a man in middle Tennessee few months back said he had not drove or used it in 10 years but was sure it was an older restore . And since I've got it I've run it and did things with it , that noise had not started till the other day. Like said its like something rubbing in there like clutch disc or something or a bearing of some kind??? If it was reduction gear you would think it be coming from someplace else but at idle Speed and in neutral it makes that noise but not in gear?
