Combining the cereal rye.

No rain for two months, get the neighbor's combine today, go 100 feet and it pours on me. Oh well, waited half an hour and made a few rounds in the rye. This should have been cut 2 weeks ago, but hey, when you get to use someone else's combine you are on their schedule.

(quoted from post at 20:22:01 07/25/15) That"s a nice looking Model 60!

Yeah, we don't have the rust and humidity out here....but the neighbor said he put a lot of hours into it last year to get it to run....had been sitting for a long time.

Is cereal rye the same as winter rye? I am custom combining some winter rye for a neighbor. First time I ever had anything to do with rye. I had no idea it grew so tall. Must have been 5 ft. tall
before the rain and wind drove it all down. Here in So. Mn. we have to swath our grain to get it to dry down. I had one devil of a time swathing that matted mess but combining is going great. What is
a typical yield for rye? I am doing a 31 acre field. Hard to tell what it is yielding because it is a odd shaped field. I have 300 bushels out so far but just can't tell how many acres are done.

Yes it is the same as winter rye. I'm not sure what the yield per acre should be, but I think around 25 bu for this field. I planted it thin thinking it was just going to be a cover crop and get plowed under, but it looked nice and clean so I kept it for seed....but the neighbor was slow getting his combine dug out of his shed and the weeds really shot up lately so not so clean anymore. It is over 5 ft tall, but really started to go down and get tangled up the last week....probably lose quite a bit because of that.

(quoted from post at 06:26:34 07/26/15) I always thought there were 2 types of rye.

One is Cereal rye that looks and grows similar to wheat.

The other is Annual ryegrass that we grow in the winter for grazing cows.

Cereal or winter rye is planted in the fall as a cover crop and is being used to capture nitrogen that would otherwise leach from the soil. I planted some rye grass last year that I got cheap from a guy on Craigslist....they thought it was cereal rye. It made a beautiful lawn! Looks like I got about 18 bushel off my 3/4 acre...just happy to have found a combine to save most of it. I'm sure it will green up real nice after I work it up in the next week or so.
