Yanmar tractors

My dad is looking at purchasing a utility tractor of his own. Seems some of the major brands run a Yanmar diesel in them anyways and the Yanmar tractors have a smaller price tag. So would like to know about anyones experiences with them. Pros/Cons. Thanks

They are good compact tractors. Just do not get a used gray market one. Parts can be hard to find for them.

I'd buy one in a minute if there were a dealer around. My JD750 compact was a re-badged Yanmar and I rode that thing HARD for 27 years and then sold it for about half of what I paid for it and could've gotten more if I weren't in a hurry.

Only traded cuz I'm old and soft and wanted AC and power steering..."8^)

Hoye Tractor sells about any part you'd ever need for so called 'Grey Market' Yanmars matter of fact those that bought from Yanmar dealers some years ago are now having to buy their parts at Grey Market parts suppliers.Grey Market Yanmars and older Fiat built tractors have the
the best parts support going for tractors their age.

JD has used Yanmar engines for years. They are better engines than JD of comparable size. They use them in a lot of their small Heavy Duty construction equipt. That being said, the tractors are good enough but not quite as good as the John Deere or Kubota tractors IMO.

Can he get service for his tractor, made in America or not? Parts availability and service should factor in to the purchase. I happen to have a 950 Deere (Yanmar) and can get parts and service through the local Deere dealer. At issue is that my 950 is a 1980 and parts are getting harder to find. When I needed a flywheel, the Deere guy had to go out 3rd party and get me a used one. No problem, but new was back ordered forever and ever and ever. Keep stuff like that in mind.

I have a 1976 Yanmar YM 240 two cylinder 24hp that I mow and run short augers with. Tack quit at 940 probably 20 years ago. No problem but starts harder in the winter now. Still can get some parts and uses VERY LITTLE FUEL.

I know a guy who had one that lasted for a long time this was one from the 80s but he was brush hogging a few years ago and he got golden rod dust stuck in the cooling vent and the thing went up with a bang and a whole lot a smoke. he just bought a new Mahindra and loves it

Some, if not all 2000R JD's are a through and through Yanmar. They seem like a pretty nice machine. Can't knock the quality of them at all. Maybe the Yanmar machines aren't as well built, but I can't see that being the case. It says John Deere on the serial tag, but at the bottom of the tag it says: OSAKA, JAPAN YANMAR CO. Don't think the tag even mentions Moline, Illinois on it. I would not be a Yanmar tractor meant for sale in North America. I would avoid grey market machines for parts availability reasons.

Was shopping for a compact tractor in 1989. Looking at a John Deere, I noticed a slight difference in the paint from the front of the transmission back. I mentioned it to the salesman and he told me from the front of the transmission forward was made in Japan by Yanmar, from the transmission back was made somewhere else and they were bolted together in the US

i have had some experience with their tractors and mini excavators, all good, there tough little machines, i just bought a john deere 850, which is a yanmar, its been run hard and is still up for the party, if deere likes them enough to use them for the under 50 hp market, wearing their name, and will support them they must be good

Don't think he was was calling Yanmar a 'grey market' tractor. I think he was referring to something like Long or Montana. I certainly don't consider Yanmar as grey market (and no, I don't own one; no dog in the fight) 8)

No there are Grey Market Yanmars I've had several they are reconditioned in Japan and sold directly to retailers or brokers over here in the USA.Yanmar USA won't even sell a part for one even though some are the same as the offically imported ones. But the joke is on them now as the Grey Market parts suppliers have the parts market now for both and I guess they'll get the JD Yanmar parts market as well.Long and Montana's are not whats known as Grey Market tractors BTW.

Okay , guess I didn't understand what 'Grey Market' actually means.
Thanks for straightening me out!
