serial number

i power washed this little jd 850 i bought so i can see where the leaks are and what it needs to fix them, also thought id figure out what year it was in case i need parts in the future, now tractor data says the serial number is located below the pto, no such number on this one which has a loader and backhoe on it, but it does have a engine tag on the engine is this the number to use in determining the year of the tractor, i wouldnt worry, but there seems to be references online to a 'early' and late john deere 850, so year might be important

The JD 850s where built for 10-11 years. There where changes in them over the years. The serial number tag was on the lower rear drawbar support. You can see it in the picture. I think a JD dealer's service department can look it up with just the engine serial number on the newer stuff but I am not sure on something older than the 1990s.

thanks, thats where i thought it was, but this tractor is missing the tag, and its either a old repaint or was gone a long time, there's no trace of it once having had the tag , the engine tage has a made, in 3-1-80 on that so im figuring its a early model, figuring they used the engine the same year or the next year it was made, of course after this time it may not even be the original engine either lol
