Does anyone know the secret to adjusting the PTO clutch on a MF 231? The manual says a deale technician is required, but I want to do it myself. Manual says it is an internal adjustment.
Thanks.

It is a internal adjustment. When I had my 231 apart I was facing the same thing, about setting the PTO clutch. As I remember it wasn't too bad. Don't remember all the details though. I must have done something right as it works. Stan

Don't tell me I have to split the tractor to male the adjustment. The PTO doesn't slip, it just won't go into gear so I start ithe motor with it already in gear. Was hoping a long screwdriver or something might do the trick
If I have to split the tractor to fix it I might as well replace the whole thing.

Its been a while but I used to adjust the PTO clutches on the 35, 65, 135 165 and the 200 series tractors through the bottom. Three screws with locknuts, we always set the clearance a tad tighter than the book called for. I think your 231 is doable the same way.

remove the plate under the bell housing and you can see the pressure plate there are 3 5/16" bolts with jam nuts evenly space around the pressure plate at best you will be able to see 2 of them, you will have to turn the flywheel to see all of them, using 2 1/2" wrenches loosen jam nut and turn the bolt out until there is .080 gap between the head of the bolt and the pto plate tighten the jam nut turn the flywheel to access the next 2 and adjust them the same that should solve your problem

Thanks for the help. I shouldn't have a problem with the information you supplied. I like to do things myself when I can.
