My wife is home but she sure is very sore and in lots of pain. She is supposed to take her pain meds every 6 hours but it seems like they wear off at 4 hours. We have the Doctor working on a different route to go.

A little more information that is not too private.

1) My wife's heart issues are entirely caused by her diabetes.( Smoking has added to the troubles) So her heart is getting weaker. A transplant is not an option. Really stabilizing what she has is the only way. Really not recovering heart function just trying to stop or slow any more declines.

2) She does not need a the pace maker she has a regular heart beat. They are worried about her weak heart completely quitting so she needs to be on a defibrillator 24/7. She had been wearing a vest type defibrillator since Feb. and it was very uncomfortable.

Thanks for the kind words and support.

My mother had one implanted after a severe heart attack in '10. Luckily, hers has never "kicked in." Hope your wife never needs hers, but like the old saying goes, "better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!"

Been working on her to quit. She is too sore right now to go outside. I finally put my foot down on smoking in the house. I got tired of tar and nicotine stains on things. She would not work with the quit smoking people before but she says she wants to this time. They will be here the first of the week. We will see. She usually just get sneakier about "hiding" her smoking. Right now she can't get out to hide her smoking.

I hope she gets better soon and has good luck quitting, its got to help immensely to stop, for both of you. Its miserable with a smoker inside a home, and 2nd hand smoke is nothing to fool with as I am sure you are aware. My mother will never quit, she has no idea what its done to her either, I can't explain why she's able to continue, but at some point it will be a factor. That will be a huge plus if you can help her away from those darned smokes! Wish you the best of luck, as I know how stubborn that habit can be to kick for some.

JD, I hope she doesn't give up. Easy for me to say because I don't have any painful life threatening afflictions. I don't know how I would behave if I was in her shoes. Quitting smoking won't repair the damage but she does need all the clean air she can get to help her maintain her health.

JD eller I know what you are talking about, I am 70 yrs. old and for 40 of thoese yrs. I smoked, sometimes getting into the 3rd pack in a day. 27 yrs ago I found out I had diabetes, was told to stop smoking, I didn't, a few years later I was told that I had a leaking heart valve, needed to stop smoking, I didn't, a little while later was told I had copd, to stop smoking, I didn't, finally almost 15 years ago I quit!!! hardest thing I ever did. I can not walk from my house to my shop without running out of air and huffing and puffing like a steam engine, tell your wife she can quit, I did, didn't think I ever could, tell her the quicker she lays them down the better off she will be.

I smoked for 3 or 4 years and then quit for 8 years. Then I was stupid enough to start again and smoked 2 packs a day for another 20 years. I knew how stupid it was everyday when I stopped at the convenience store after work and dropped over $14.00 for smokes. My family hated it everyday, especially when we rode in the car. Finally ,as 2014 was coming to the end, I decided I was going to quit and I haven't had a cig. in 2015. I went from 2 packs a day to zero overnight with no help of any kind. I am living proof that if I can do it, anyone can. You tell your wife what I said and yes, even she can quit. Ask her what advantages there are to smoking. For her or you or anyone. Just try to list them.

sorry to hear that,,we wish for the best here from nj,,,a good friend of mine that I Work with now and then has diabetes,,they just did open heart surgery for him and he is doing well

This forced period of no smoking may be the ticket. Those first weeks can break the physical part. The hand mouth habit is harder. Best of luck. Jim

Just remember when she quits and gets all cranky, to just let it go, it will be over in a week or two. Both of us have been smoke free since 1985. Wife had a heart attack three years later,Doc said it would have killed her if she was still smoking. She just had the third pace maker installed about 9 weeks ago.

JD,

I got a combination pacemaker -defib 2 months ago ,a little muscle
soreness , and to limit arm motion. Heart was running slow , doc was
worried it would quit. Was supposed to get a 3 wire one ,but couldn't
get the 3rd wire to stay put , so have 2 wire one. Also heart is only
pumping 30% of what it should . I do believe I feel better than I did,
but have to work slow.

An old timer that used to come in my shop said, I can still do a days
work , it just takes me all week.

I quit the summer of '57...I was sitting on my tricycle and tried to inhale and it knocked me off the darn thing...

Honestly, those E-cigs are a miracle. they have the same feel as a real cig when you take in a draw. only good thing is that there is no tar. they still have the nicotine.

The best thing you can do is change her smoking habits, likeot letting her smoke in the house or car. That habit or smoking in certain places is just as bad as the physical addiction.

Worst case, just buy her a can of copehagen and tell her if she wants a smoke, to dip a bit and see if it calms that. after 45 minutes, she will puke everywhere and never want to do it again. It worked for people I know. I still smoke. I tried to kick it more times than you could imagine. The thing that I can't get over is having people smoking around me, or smelling a lit cig. I can't stand the anti-smoking commercials. they make me want one so bad. The E-cig made it easier for a long time, but, I never had support.

Seriously, e-cigs are better than smoking, and chewing is better than dying if chewing makes someone puke and give it up. I just know exactly what a smoker goes through and I am not quit. I post a lot in the middle of the night and chances are, I am up from withdraw of some kind. Right now, I ha to get up for a smoke and that lead to another...

I hope you can get her quit and if you smoke or smoked, I hope you have mercy on her. If you never did, I hopeyou have even more mercy on her, but hope you know it is a huge battle. Once someone excepts death as a complication of smoking, they won't quit They need to understand quality of life is also a complication. Quality is the problem. You will fix it. You can fix anything and...

I believe in you.
