Portable Fencing

So I have a small pasture, about 6/10s of a acre, that I'd like to let my Jersey cow graze off. What would be the best method for that? I have plenty of hot wire, over 4 thousand feet, but I'm not sure if I wanna go through the trouble of getting it all working again for that small of a area for one cow. Any sugestions?

Barb wire would be another option but expensive to build if built right. Cows are notorious about wanting to reach thru/across a barb wire fence and can eventually destroy it. I would not consider anything but a hot wire unless putting up a permanent fence with posts and boards which would be prohibitive because of cost.

First off how tame is it?? If pretty tame you might tie it to a old tractor tire or some such thing. That is how we deal with our mini horses just tie them to old car tires and let them have at the area we do not have fenced.

The Cow is really tame, but she is not good with leashes. She always gets rapped up in it and hurts herself. I'd let her rome free, but I have a feeling she'd find her way into trouble, such as eating the lawn and garden.

1/2 an acre? How hard can it be to run one strand of electric fence wire around that? A t post at each corner, an average of 2 of those little 3/8 diameter short posts between them, put on insulators, use small diameter fence wire. If your other fence is electric, make a lane with the new wire leading to a gate, so the cow will have to go to the old part for water. They WILL go to water, sooner or later. If no electricity on old fenceUse a tpost for a ground and hook up a charger. The most difficult part of taking down the fence in the future will be rolling up the wire and that's no big deal.

Tractor Supply has poly wire for about $25 and an extension cord reel is roughly $8. An electric fence handle is about $3. I put the handle at the end of the poly wire and reel the wire up with the extension cord reel. 4 T-posts, 4 T-post insulators and 10 step in posts and you are all set if you decide to do electric. I have a few Jerseys on a 1 wire temporary fence on about 1.5 acres right now. Easy job. Good luck.

If you have the electric wire and posts and charger,it should not take 1/2 an hour to put up;that is what I would do,especially if she knows what the hot wire is.If the grass is real tall, run a bush hog around the perimeter first.Mark

I have done Hi tensile steel, three in one poly electric, portable net electric, barbed wire, four board with elec. inside. If I were you I would get an anchor from Tractor Supply that you twist into the ground, thirty feet of rope, and move her every 2-3 days. Work around your watering trough so that you move it only once a week.

If you don't want to spend the money on a fence, you may pay later when your cow gets out and causes damages to neighbor's property. One time our cows got out, rainy night. A drunk hits a cow, totals his car. We butchered the cow, hamburger. Better have good insurance. Put GPS on cow and get a 4 wheeler or Motorcycle to chase her.

Similar story, friends horses gets out, drunk hits horse. Kills horse. Case is still in the court. May want to have a good lawyer too.

My advice, don't be cheap about making a good fence. Make it lawyer proof if that's possible.
