New Holland 5060 Conventional baler

Hi,
A friend has taken delivery of a new New Holland conventional baler shipped to the UK via Belgium. The first 200 or so bales were fine. Suddenly the RH knotter stopped working. Close examination revealed that the flat twine finger spring had moved and the cord was no longer being held securely in the twine disc. His field remedy was to tap a piece of wood in between the knotter frame and spring to prevent it moving. The dealer replaced the spring and retainer. It worked OK for a short time before failing again. The wooden peg was refitted and he was able to carry on. NH don't have an answer at the moment but have measured the frame etc. Wondering if anyone else has had any problems of this sort?

Just my thought, I would not give in to the temptation to go ahead and fix this / redesign this / repair this / modify this. I would let the dealer know, it is YOUR problem, come fix it, and hurry it up. It might be as soon as YOU modify it, it becomes your problem.

Call or take that baler BACK to the dealer IMEDIATELY! Any attempt at repair or modiification will VOID the warranty

Hi, thanks for your replies. Yes, the dealer is on the case. I have the necessary engineering know-how to make a modification to hold the spring but would not do anything without the dealer's and NH acceptance. I have been involved in the repair of NH and MF balers and other makes for nearly 40 years. Demand for small bales in the UK does seem to be growing again but there are very few new small balers sold in the UK at the moment.
As I understand it the US is still a major producer of small bales and as such hopefully someone might have come across this problem with this or a previous generation of baler.

You really need to run the baler through a knot tying cycle by hand to see what the problem is. If they just replaced the parts, but didn't diagnose what caused the problem, it will keep happening!

The best thing to do is have someone else turn the flywheel slowly as you trip the knotters so you can watch the entire tying cycle. It really sounds like maybe a needle is not correctly placed, or paint was not properly removed during the dealer prep. There are certain places the factory paint has to be removed before using the baler.

Hello John,
That has been done. The needle tip position is correct and the number 2 cord is being delivered correctly into the slot in the twine disc. It appears that there is a difference in the knotter frame which is allowing the twine finger spring to move sideways and lose its pressure on the RH twine retainer. As said, when the spring is correctly positioned the knotter works perfectly.
