Double the fun

Set up another 175D for field mowing the last couple of days. The tractor on the left was my original mowing tractor, but after it developed a fuel leak I switched tractors and never went back to it. The other tractor has a new engine and a tad more horses, which is nice....but it drinks more too!

I bought another mower last week, so now I can leave one on a job and still have one at home for local work. New mower has the heavy duty rear wheel package, makes it heavier to lift so it went on the old 175D as it has the heavier front end on it. We will see how it handles it, may have to load the front tires to keep the front end on the ground in the hills.

Loaded up for a few jobs tomorrow about 40 miles away.

(quoted from post at 19:13:47 07/13/15) which one is for Bryce to drive? He wants you to hire him,,he will learn to like orange....{lol}

I think Bryce is a little wet behind the ears to be running one of these machines :p

(quoted from post at 19:09:10 07/13/15) Oh Man ! I thot you had the 'Doublemint Twins' out by the pool. Fantasy lost ! HPH

The doublemint twins work the produce trailer. If you are nice I might post a pic of them sometime :D

I owned a AC 185 diesel for all of six months. I absolutely hated that tractor. Poor transmission/shifting, NO live PTO Still had to use the "hand clutch" or Hi-Lo shifter for PTO work. SLOW enough on the road to make paint dry faster. I know your AC 175 has a better motor with the Perkins. Still I just did not care for the whole "feel" of the tractors. They did have a pretty trouble free PTO drive unit. I guess if I had never ran anything else they would have been fine.

The AC 175/185 have a good following as far as a tractor to buy and sell but I would not keep one. Different strokes for different people.

Glad your mowing business is picking up.

The 175's are a lot different from the 185. The 175 uses the "big stick" mechanical hi-lo whereas the 185 hi-lo is hydraulically operated and can't be feathered like the 175. Also you straddle the transmission on the 175, so I sit lower and the standing position is perfect for watching for rocks and obstacles when mowing new fields. It has a few drawbacks like the hand clutch, throttle and hydraulics all on the rh side, but with practice you get used to it. That is why you either like em or hate em I guess, but for what I do I haven't found a better machine. I could use my cab tractor, or even buy a newer fancy tractor, but my production would suffer, and I would surely tear up more equipment mowing what I mow. A lot of competition has come and gone since I started in 2001.....everyone thinks it is easy (including Bryce - LOL).

Is the 175 more of a D-17 style driveline??? I have ran those and they where not too bad with the tall lever where you can control things easier. There are not many AC 175s around here. More AC 180/185 and 190/200 here.

I ran a neighbors XT190 a lot. They had a better HI/Lo setup than the 180/185.

A funny thing the neighbor had two of the XT190s. One had "independent PTO" You could turn it on and off while moving but still had to use the Hi-LO shifter to stop while still powering the PTO. Never could really tell what is was very useful for.

The 301 AC motor was not near as good as your Perkins. They just needed more attention at fewer hours then most of the JD or IH.

The D17 went thru the series till Series IV, then was basically given new skin and became the 170. The diesel version got the Perkins instead of the 262 Buda. 170 hp was increased a bit to become the 175.

The high/low on the AC tractors of that era is the best on the go shifting of any tractor built then,
its about as tough and and handy as its gets. Both high and low were made to be used all the time unlike some that the low was just to shift down for short stretches.I've been looking for a good 170 or 175 but they still sell for good $$$ around here.

Checked the fuel on the tractor on the trailer...the one I used yesterday. I used half a tank (10 gallons/$25) doing $700 of mowing. This particular tractor has always been real good on fuel. The other has a newer engine, a bit more power, but will use more fuel.
