Visiting the USA

Hi all,

Ken here from Ireland. I am visiting the US for two weeks in August/September. On my itinerary I have the following to visit.

Half Century of Progress, Rantoul
Farm Progress Show, Decatur
Mid West old threshers, Mount Pleasant

How much time do you think I should set aside for visiting them. I'm thinking 1 1/2 to 2 days at each.

I'm also visiting Heartland Museum, Clarion, IA specifically to see Big Bud 747.

The real boss also wants to get some shopping done in between so we'll have a busy couple of weeks

Midwest Old Threshers is a 2 day event as well. It can be done in one, but 2 is better. Send me an e-mail if you make it. I spend all 5 days out there. Oh, don't plan on coming the last Monday, pretty much empty by mid morning.

If the boss wants to shop, probably should
swing into the Mall of America for a short trip

Welcome Ken,
For the past two years my wife and I have been a guest of your country in the month of September and have enjoyed it immensely especially the Plowing Match in County Laois. It sounds like you have a
great schedule already planned but if you get anywhere near Michigan the Ford Museum in Dearborn is very worth while. It's a three part plan that includes the museum, Greenfield Village and a tour of the
River Rouge truck plant. Near by is the Somerset Mall which is a high end shopping experience that your wife would be forever grateful if you would just let her spend a day, especially with your credit card in hand. Give me a call at 810-655-4859 when you get over here if I can enhance your holiday. Sincerely Tom

You have picked some good spots,, I will be at the Rantual show, with my new project..Hope to see you there,,Friday/Sat are the best days

If you can go farther north the Rollag Minnesota show is Labor Day weekend, saturday, sunday and monday.
It's too big to see and do everything in 3 days. Not so many gas tractors as other places, but a dozen
or more steam engines, many early gas tractors like Oil Pulls and Samsons. Too many hit and miss engines
to count. A 2 story tall Allis steam engine running a generator. Seversl saw mills, threshers and other
belt drive farm implements in opperation. If the fields are dry enough they do plowing with the steamers
and large steel wheeled tractors. They also have a large section of antique construction equipment in
opperation including a couple steam shovels. There is also a horse section with working horse equipment.
And a period town with shopping and working printing presses. It's a long way from where you intend to
be, but well worth the trip.

Welcome Wife and I set up a booth in the south exhibiters building at Old Threshers. Would love to chat about tractors if you have time to stop. Will be Randol Honey Farm.

Much better than Old Threashers and there is plenty of room to see everything. Old Threashers have so many people it's hard to get around.

HUMDING - welcome to the USA, hope your visit is fun and safe!
Agree that Old Threshers at Mt Pleasant, IA has a lot of people - - as do most of the big shows,...and that you do need 2 days to see everything, and to visit with some nice folks you are sure to meet.
If you can visit Mt Pleasant on Thursday and Friday, before the families with school-age children are in attendance, the crowds are much less and exhibitors less stressed.
Hope to see other YT'ers there!
John

Hi All,

Sorry for not coming back sooner. Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. Our basic itinerary is as follows

1) Arrive Chicago on Sun Aug 23rd
2) Visit Greenfield Village etc on the Monday (was there 7 years ago and didn't have half enough time)
3) Spend a while trying to find some of the history of my 1964 Case 1200 traction King that came from a sod farm in Howell, Michigan.
4) Visit Half Century of Progress
5) Visit Heartlands Museum, Clarion, IA., specially to see Big Bud 747 (as you can see I like my big American tractors)
6) Visit Farm Progress Show.
7) Visit Old Threshers, Mount Pleasant
8) Fly out of Chicago on Sun Sept 6th

As you can see it will be a packed 2 weeks but I hope to meet up with a few of you along the way. Looking forward to seeing that 4WD popper. What axle did you use? We might do some honey testing as well.
Its been 7 years since my last visit to the US and I'm really looking forward to visiting your country again. I'm sure my girlfriend will get sick of tractors but then again retail therapy of the clothing variety doesn't really excite me either.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi all,

Would anybody be able to answer my question regarding when the tractor pulling ends on Sat evening normally.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi all,

Just got home from the USA yesterday morning. Had a great couple of weeks and meet some very nice people. Met hd6gtom and his wife at Mount Pleasant. Unfortunately missed tim s at Rantoul but was talking with his son and looked over the 4wd JD. Nicely executed work I have to say. Got to all we hoped but was slightly disappointed I didn't manage to find the previous owner of my Case 1200 traction king.
For the farmers among you I have a question on your cropping. In Illinois and Iowa there is a lot of corn and Soya Beans but saw very little wheat stubble. Do the farmers manage to double crop the land (ie wheat early in the year and corn/soya beans later in the year)
