Best White house paint

Ok, until I get some things done around the farm, I cannot get to work on my tractors. I have been putting it off too long.

Since they took the lead out of paint, I cannot get white house paint to last more than a few years. My house is northern cedar from the late 40's, and I want to repaint it white. What is the best paint to use on old cedar clad siding?

Flouresent orange and white diagonal strips with the words cautio,,, oh wait, you mean "a" white house, not "the" Whitehouse.
Seriously, what Stephen said is true. I would only add for paint to resist peeling there must be a moisture barrier between it and living space. I wouldn't advocate adding a barrier to an existing home but if you remodel or add on it's highly reccomended. And for the record, new cedar needs primer to block tannin bleeding, esp with white.

As with painting anything, it is in the prep, and prepping cedar shingles is tough. The only way that I can see to do it effectively is with a pressure washer. In order for the paint to adhere well you have to be looking at a hi percentage of fresh yellow wood. Then you need to oil base prime it then a good top coat. Do it all at once or do it frequently.

I agree with you that the paint sold now is JUNK !!!! I have a 10X12 building I keep trying to hold paint onto. So far last time I got some Sherman Williams and it is holding up better than the others. I don't remember the name of it. I think it was a step below the best ? So I'd "ask Sherman Williams" and go with their paint.

Cypress, cedar and redwood are "oily" woods , as already mentioned, and take proper surface prep. Finding oil based house paint might be pretty tough now days. You can go latex over oil but not oil over latex. Is the siding able to breathe i.e. moisture able to escape from the interior to the outside? I used to sell homeowners small "cricket vents" about the size of a 25¢ piece for use in older homes that were built prior to the use of vapor barriers.

I don't know where your located but the brand Iowa Paint is about the best you can get here. If I couldn't get that I would use Sherwin Williams or PPG products.

About all you can buy anymore is latex. but that's not important. What is important is to go to Sherwin Williams and buy their best oil based primer.

I would go to Sherwin Williams and tell them the story, also make sure all the old oxidation is off.

At the White House they use a lot of something called "White Wash". No idea where they get it all but it seems to work really well - sticks like crazy and lasts forever if properly applied. :)

Unless you are in one of those nanny states you can still buy quality paint, but make sure it is NOT the low VOC mess. VOCs are you friend.

Also, do not buy paint in a big box store or hardware store. You should ONLY get paint (at least for a large project that will cost a lot) at a genuine paint store. Benjamin Moore is quality paint if you get it from a paint store, but Benjamin Moore at Ace Hardware is junk. Same goes for other brands. Do not consider a brand that is only sold in box stores.

I switched to using Cabot Solid Color Decking Stain in white about 10 years ago and have been very pleased. My siding is not in great shape to begin with, so that is part of my problem. But it seems to stick better than paint did, and I used good oil based and then latex paints previously.

Paint it nnalert Red. OOPS. I didn't read the post- I thot youse waz talkin pollyticks......

Nothing like a wooden house painted white. Fence either. I gave up on the white fence, its getting painted black.

As far as the other stuff posted about the...white house, I was tempted too, but held my tongue. Right now, I'm about to bite through my tongue.
