I posted about that Oliver 88 I looked I'm thinking about buying it but don't know if I should I have 3 other tractors but one is currently under overhaul but none re diesels and that 88 is. I don't really have a big use for it besides just driving around or pulling a trailer as I don't have farmland eventually though I do want to rent a few acres to farm. The money isn't an issue because I have plenty saved up and I have a job plus I'll be getting paid today for a mowing job I'm doing (200) plus I made a deal to cut 10 cords of wood to sell to a guy at 120 a cord. I just want some options on what I should do and I'm real good friends with a farmer he might let me run a disc around in one of his fields next spring what do yo guys think?

Nick,
It is really hard to give advise, when little or no info is given. I found a post about a model 77, but now you are talking about a model 88. With no picts, no condition stated, price, tires, condition, nothing about your other 3 tractors, nothing posted about your operation, nothing about storage space, etc. then I would not know where to begin.

Oh sorry I have the storage the 77 I have is under rebuild I have a case 530 and a ford 8n both run great I don't really have an operation if you go down a couple posts its titled value that's the about that 88

Real hard to say if you do not have land to use it on. I have close to 30 tractor ya not all of them run and maybe 10-15 are parts tractor but I also own land so I have a good reason to own tractors.

One thing I learned when I collected toys, buy what you like, not what you think others would want.
Myself, with all the Olivers I have around here,I don't have an 88. I used to. A diesel. The only diesels I have anymore are users, the 1850 and the 1365,and the big White of course. For collector tractors though,I'd just as soon have gas tractors, but that's just me.

Nick, depending on what you want to do, you should maybe look at things the way I do.

Right now, I own no land, and only have access to 5 acres (plus the 1 at home, but too small to count)

If you think of what I have, compared to the amount of "farming" I do, I am WAY over sized! 16 tractors, plows, discs, harrows, you name it, I have 2 or 3.

When I came across that swather I just bought it, even though I don't at all need it, it was a good buy, on a good machine, that can and will help me make my future. IF you can get a jump on your future by getting this workhorse at a reasonable price, and even get a nice collector tractor out of it at the same time, GO FOR IT!

You can always sell it if you want, maybe for more than you buy it for...

I am on the hunt for more modern stuff now. Buying and selling OLD stuff, and using the money to get "bigger and better". Looking at a Ford 5000 diesel tractor tomorrow, what a dream it would be to own that! Just keep climbing, thats the only way we will ever make it to the top! ;)

Nick that tractor running would not be hard to sell. So As long as your safe on your purchase price even if you later decide you do not want it anymore you can sell it and come out OK. I have kicked myself many more times for NOT buying a tractor than buying one. There are not too many Oliver diesel 88 around that can be bought reasonable. There are always guys looking for the diesels.

So my advise is buy it if you can get a fair price on it. It seems you have the money and the storage space for it so go for it. Just because you bought it does not mean your married to it forever.

If that tractor starts and runs good, buy it. You can always sell it if something better comes along. Go ahead and buy it and get it out of your system.
