How important are nitrates?

Two of the engines that I tested with coolant strips
yesterday tested very low in nitrates. The low level
recommended I put a nitrate additive in it. The pH
and freeze temp were good.

One was a gas and one was diesel. I have no idea
if the diesel is a cavitation concern - it's an Onan
built whole farm generator. I don't know if it is wet
sleeve or not and am not sure I could find out. I
called Cummins Onan about something else on it
and they acted like it was from another planet.

From what I remember about boilers, the nitrite level is how you monitor the corrosion inhibitor level. So adding corrosion inhibitor additive is the indicated solution.

However, the test kits have a shelf life. Be sure you are getting a good test before making any changes.

The problem could be the old coolant or old test strips. If new coolant checks good, I'd change the coolant.
